The Barton Community College Volleyball Team rolled through their season opening tournament this past week-end, winning all four matches in twelve straight sets while holding opponents under 20 points in ten of those sets.
“As a team, we put up some very respectable numbers this weekend,” said Head Coach Patrick Hall. “We hit at or over .300 for every match. We also had a fairly aggressive serving performance, though we’ll need to cut down on errors. And we had a number of outstanding individual efforts in several matches. I was particularly happy to see our assist/set average go up considerably above where we were last year. That’s an efficiency stat that we’ll need Ju to maintain. And Giselle anchored our defense with a very solid performance.”
On Friday, the Cougars dispatched Hesston College 25-8, 25-9, 25-17. Sophomore Giselle de Moura led the defensive effort with 12 digs while freshman Ashley Archer and sophomore Juliana de Barros added 7 each. The offense was led by sophomore Taylor Arnold’s 10 kills on the outside. Freshman Paula da Silva added 8 while hitting .410 from the middle. Sophomore Gabriella Oliveira contributed 7. De Barros dished out 25 assists.
In the evening match, Barton continued their dominant play, defeating Cisco (TX) 25-16, 25-16, 25-12. Oliveira and Archer both had 9 digs, with sophomore Kamri Nehls adding 7. Da Silva paced the offense with 12 kills on seventeen attempts for a .640 average. Oliveira hit .305, with 9 kills. De Barros pushed the offense with 29 assists. Da Silva posted 5 aces, with Archer and de Moura serving 3 each.
On Saturday, the Cougars made short work of Clarendon College (TX), winning 25-13, 25-21, 25-15. De Barros directed the offense with a tournament high 38 assists. Da Silva kept up her torrid scoring pace with 14 kills and hitting .600. Oliveira was also in double digits with 10 kills while hitting .260. De Moura posted a tournament high 20 digs, and Oliveira got a double/double with 10 digs to go along with her 10 kills.
In the afternoon, the Cougars squared off against the other undefeated team in the tournament, Butler Community College. The results were almost identical to the Clarendon match, with Barton cruising to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-16 win. Butler did not have an answer for Oliveira on the outside. She capped her weekend off with a 13 kill, .410 hitting effort. De Barros again distributed over 10 assists/set, with a 31 assist match. Libero Giselle de Moura again led the defense with 11 digs. Da Silva, who hit only .250 for the match, still recorded 3 blocks and an ace.
Barton returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to Garden City Community College to open Jayhawk Conference play. After another road match on Friday against Cloud County Community College, the Lady Cougars will return to their home floor on Wednesday September 7 against Dodge City Community College.
