With a three set sweep of Cloud County on Friday night, the Barton Community College Volleyball team extended their 2011 winning streak to 6-0 and 18 straight sets. But it wasn’t easy, as the T-Birds pushed the Cougars to 27-25 in the second set. Barton won sets one and three 25-15 and 25-14 respectively.
“Though we struggled with some passing and serving lapses, we had superb offensive execution,” said Head Coach Patrick Hall. “Paula hit .900 with no errors, and Taylor Arnold had a career best night hitting .750 with no errors. That helped us to a .510 night as a team. That’s probably a career high, and I hope our 13 service errors also turn out to be a career high.”
In the first set Barton hit a collective .656 with 15 kills. Arnold, the Smith Center sophomore, led the assault with 5 kills in 5 attempts. Paula da Silva added 4 on 4 attempts. Juliana de Barros dished out 16 assists on only 21 attempts.
In the second set, the Cougars were burdened by six service errors, but they still managed to hit .481 behind de Barros and Arnold’s 4 kills each. Besides dishing out 11 assists, de Barros kept Barton in the game with 4 digs.
Remarkably, Arnold did not see a set in the final stanza, but the Cougars didn’t need her offensive production. They enjoyed a sizable lead most of the game while hitting .420. Gabriela Oliveira led the offense with 4 kills.
For the evening, de Barros had a career high 12 assists/set, with a total of 36. She also hit .555 with 5 kills, pulled up 5 digs and added 2 aces. Oliveira actually led the offense in kills with 10 while hitting .500. That hitting percentage would lead the team on most nights, but it with da Silva’s .900 and Arnold’s .750, it looked only average. Both da Silva and Arnold had 9 kills each. Da Silva also contributed 4 aces and 2 blocks. The defense was led by Oliveira and Giselle de Moura with 8 and 6 digs respectively.
Barton will open their home season this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. as they host Dodge City Community College.
