Barton Community College volleyball player Paula da Silva becomes the second Lady Cougar player to be named the KJCCC Volleyball Verizon Wireless Player of the Week twice this year. Da Silva, a freshman middle blocker from Uberlandia, Brazil, hit over .300 and recorded 100 kills, including 30 in one match, as the Lady Cougars played four ranked or previously ranked teams. Da Silva’s performance was even more amazing because of having to move from her normal middle position to the outside during last weekend’s games due to recent team injuries.
“Whether hitting on the outside or in the middle, Paula has proven her offensive versatility by hitting well over .300 almost every,” said Head Coach Patrick Hall. “Her 100 kills this week, against completion that keys on her, was pretty amazing.”
This is the second KJCCC weekly award da Silva has earned. In week three she received the award after posting a flawless 16 kill performance against Dodge City on September 7. Da Silva joins Juliana Melo de Barros as two-time award recipients for the Lady Cougars as de Barros won the award the previous two weeks.
Throughout the year da Silva has been a continuous force in the middle for the Cougars, leading the reigning Region VI Champions and No. 19 ranked Lady Cougars to a 22-10 record on the season including an undefeated 10-0 in conference play. For the season she has 253 kills and leads the team with a .363 hitting percentage and kills per set average, along with aces (29) and blocks (82).
Barton travels to Pratt today to take on the dangerous Lady Beavers in conference play beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Cougars return to the road on Thursday to play Colby Community College in a rematch of the previous meeting’s five-set Barton victory.
