Barton Community College volleyball player Juliana Melo de Barros was named the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Player of the Week today. The honor is in addition to de Barros also being named earlier this week the KJCCC Volleyball Verizon Wireless Co-Player of the Week. De Barros, a sophomore setter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, recorded another remarkable week for the Lady Cougars directing the offense on the way to dishing out 110 assists, a 10 assist/set average.
Putting up impressive all-around statistics is the norm for de Barros. On the season she has recorded two triple-doubles and two double-doubles, a remarkable 104 kills from the setter position running a 5-1 offense, has an 8.9 assist per game average, and is third on the team with 133 digs.
“Ju is an all-around player as her statistics indicate,” said Head Coach Patrick Hall. “It’s hard for a setter to get the nod for Player of the Week whether it’s within the conference or nationally so it’s very nice to see her get this well-deserved recognition.”
A first team member of last year’s Jayhawk West All-Conference team and Barton’s reigning Region VI Championship team, de Barros has been integral in leading the Lady Cougars to a 15-6 record on the season including an undefeated 8-0 in conference play. She shares the KJCCC honor with Seward County Community College sophomore outside hitter Courtney Geesing.
De Barros started off the week with her second triple-double of the season with a 10 kill, 10 dig, 55 assist effort against Colby Community College on Monday night. In addition, her .381 hitting performance and leadership was instrumental in bringing the Lady Cougars back from a two-set deficit to win the match in five sets.
On Wednesday night in Liberal, de Barros had an off night but still delivered 26 assists, drilled 3 aces, collected 4 kills and 2 blocks in Barton’s three set sweep of conference second place and No. 20 ranked Seward County Community College. To round off her remarkable week de Barros returned to form on Friday leading Barton to yet another sweep of an opponent by dispatching Garden City, hitting .455 with 29 assists and another 3 aces.
Barton travels to Dodge City today to take on the dangerous Lady Conquistadors in conference play.
