Lady Cougars cruise thru first round of Region VI Playoffs The Barton Community College Volleyball Team cruised through their first round Region VI Playoff match on Tuesday evening at the Barton Gym, handing the visiting Garden City Community College Broncbusters a 25-11, 25-17, 25-17 defeat.
In the first set, Barton maintained a substantial lead behind a four ace performance from freshman Ashley Archer, and a five kill effort from Paula da Silva. Silva would go on to have a 15 kill, 1 error night in 18 attempts for a .777 hitting percentage. In the second set, Barton committed 11 errors resulting in Garden points, and topped that with 13 errors in set three. Nevertheless, Barton kept a comfortable margin throughout. In addition to da Silva’s 15 kills, Taylor Littleton added seven and Taylor Arnold contributed six.
The defense was led by libero Giselle de Moura with 11. Gabriella Oliviera added 10, and Ashley Archer had 9. Juliana de Barros dished out 29 assists.
Number one seeded Barton will move on to play Hutchinson, the number four seed, at noon this Saturday, at Newman University in Wichita. The Region VI Tournament is double elimination format with four teams remaining vying for the national tournament berth. The Barton/Hutch winner will play at 6:00pm against the winner of the Seward/Colby match, with the losers playing a consolation at 4:00pm. Tournament finals will be a noon on Sunday.
