The Barton Community College women’s basketball team took a big step toward a 2nd place finish in the Jayhawk West with a road win at Butler Saturday night. The Cougars left the Power Plant in El Dorado with a 67-61 West win improving to 10-3 in the conference and handing Butler its 4th West loss in the process. The Cougars are alone in 2nd but Cloud County also has 3 losses in the conference, standing at 8-3 with two more games remaining that the Cougars. Barton has 3 West games left in the regular season, starting with a home game against Hutchinson Wednesday at the Barton Gym in a 6 pm tip.
Highlights
The Cougars took control of the race for 2nd with the win at Butler, sweeping the season series from the Grizzlies. Barton overtook Butler late in the 1st half then opened up a 15-point lead in the 2nd half before holding on for the road win. It was the 1st home loss for the Grizzlies in West play and just the 2nd overall.
Barton did struggle to start the game, trailing by as many as 10 points early in the contest at 21-11 with 9 minutes left in the 1st half. But a 9-0 cut the lead to a single digit at 21-20 and Barton eventually overtook Butler at 28-27 and went to halftime up 34-30.
The Cougars took a double digit lead on Butler just 5 minutes into the 2nd half and maintained the lead in double figures nearly 9 minutes with a high of 15. But Barton got stuck on 55 points for four minutes while the Grizzlies rallied back to the lead to 55-52 with 4:32 to play. Butler would eventually make it all the way back, tying the game at 58-all with 2:28 to play.
Barton was able to finish strong, taking a 60-58 lead on a jumper in the lane from Netanya Jackson with 1:51 to play. After the teams traded misses the Cougars were able to hit free throws down the stretch so secure the win. Shea Shoemaker knocked down a pair with 36 seconds to play for a 62-58 lead and Alisha Fanshier made two more with 21 seconds to play for a 64-58 lead. Fanshier added two more charity tosses with 14 seconds to play for a 66-59 lead and Christina Caddy went 1-for-2 with 4 seconds to play as Barton hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 36 seconds of play.
Barton only put two players in double figures with Caddy scoring 12 and Shoemaker 11. The Cougars also got 9 from Fanshier and 8 each from Jackson and Dionne Harris. Jackson also had 9 rebounds to lead Barton. Abby Fawcett led all scorers with 20 for the Butler – the only player in double figures.
The Cougars still have an outside shot at a West title but must beat No 12 Hutchinson (11-1) Wednesday in order to keep those hopes alive. Hutch would then have to lose another contest and Barton win out for a tie for the title. The Blue Dragons have won 8 straight conference games – 1 better than the Cougars current streak of 7 in a row. Barton has not lost at home this year in the West with a 6-0 mark. Tip is set for 6 pm at the Barton Gym.
