Barton comes up short in games at Barton Classic

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team battled a pair of Jayhawk East powers during the Barton Classic over the weekend. The Cougars lost to Coffeyville and Independence in hard-fought battles each night. Barton’s furious rally came up short against Coffeyville Friday night in a 61-55 loss while the Cougars led much of the way Saturday before unbeaten Independence took the lead in the 2nd half and pulled away late for a 73-61 win. The Cougars are 1-2 on the season and will be back home this weekend at the Cougar Booster Club Classic against Grayson County (Texas) and Labette.

Highlights
Barton trailed by as many as 19 in the loss to Coffeyville. That Red Raven lead came at 51-32 with just 10 minutes to play in the game. But the Cougars didn’t lie down. Instead Barton fought its way back into the contest. Barton’s Raven Adams started an 11-0 run with a steal and layup with 9:17 to play and Dionne Harris capped it at the 6:36 mark to make it a 51-43 game. Unfortunately for Barton, the Cougars could never close any nearer than 5 points.

Harris led Barton with 18 points while Netanya Jackson added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Adams also scored 11 for the Cougars. Barton his just 30 percent from the field but held the Red Ravens to just 38 percent.

Barton came out on fire Saturday against the unbeaten Pirates of Independence. An early 8-0 run- 6 points from Christina Caddy – game the Cougars a 12-8 lead with 15:50 to play in the opening 20 minutes. The Cougars would hold that lead for all but one possession the rest of the half. The lead got as high as 7 before Cougars took a 37-35 lead to intermission.

Another quick start for the Cougars allowed Barton to build an early 6-point at 41-35 to start the 2nd half. Barton held that lead until 12:40 to play in the game when Indy finally overtook the Cougars at 45-44. The teams traded leads 7 times and battled through 5 ties over the next 5 minutes – the last of those ties coming at 50-all on the 1st of 2 free throws by Adams that gave Barton a 51-50 lead with 7:13 to play. That would be Barton’s final lead as the Pirates scored the 12 points to take a 62-51 lead with 4:33 left.

Adams scored 16 to lead Barton and Caddy added 12. Jackson finished with 10. Shea Shoemaker and Harris each had 7 rebounds. Taylor Floyd scored 28 and Jennifer Johnson added 16 points and 14 rebounds for Indy to lead the Pirates.

Barton will look to get back on the winning track with Grayson County and Labette visiting the Barton Gym this upcoming weekend. Grayson County is a perfect 4-0 on the season while Labette is 3-4.
