The Barton Community College women’s basketball team split games at the Booster Club Classic over the weekend, beating Labette Saturday night after losing to unbeaten Grayson County (Texas) Friday at the Barton Gym. The Cougars are now 2-3 on the season and will look to pull even at 3-3 Tuesday when they travel to Jayhawk East traditional power Cowley County in Arkansas City.
Highlights
Barton jumped off to a quick start against Labette, playing its best basketball of the young season to grab leads of 13-2, 20-6, and eventually 36-11 following an 11-0 run. The Cougars took a 43-23 lead to halftime after hitting 7-of-14 3-pointers and outrebounding the Cardinals 27-15 including 12 on the offensive end that resulted in 10 2nd chance points.
Labette rallied to start the 2nd half of play, getting the margin as low as 13 with 17 minutes to play but were never able to draw any closer. The Cougars put 3 players in double figures with Christina Caddy recording a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Dionne Harris scored 12 points and Cerissa McMillian hit 3-of-5 treys to finish with 11. Jara Shoemaker just missed a double-double, leading Barton with 14 rebounds to go with 9 points. Barton dominated the boards winning the rebound battle 60-42.
The Cougars ran into a buzz saw Friday night as Grayson rolled to a 79-53 win over Barton. Barton was down 17-15 when Grayson went on a 17-2 run to take control of the contest late in the opening half. Harris led Barton with 15 points followed by Shea Shoemaker with 10. Camille Redmon led four Vikings in double figures with 21.
Barton will be back in action Tuesday when it travels to Arkansas City to take on Cowley. Cowley is currently 5-2 on the season. Tip for the contest will be at 6 pm.
