The Barton Community College women’s basketball team opened its 2010-11 campaign with a 95-37 win over the Bethany JV Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars limited to Swedes to less than 20 points each half while exploding for 60 points in the 2nd half. The Cougars will be off for 10 days before returning to the court for what should be a very entertaining Barton Classic. The event November 12 and 13 will feature Jayhawk West schools Barton and Cloud County against Jayhawk East powers Independence and Coffeyville.
Highlights
Barton led by a 35-19 score at intermission hitting just 31 percent from the field and just 2-of-12 3-pointers. The Cougars reversed that in the 2nd half, knocking down 65 percent of their shots and connecting on 6-of-10 3’s. The game featured only freshman for the Cougars with 3 sophomores missing the contest.
Defensively, Barton was solid in both halves as Bethany made just 4 field goals the 1st and 5 in the 2nd 20 minutes. The Swedes shot 9-of-40 for the game.
Barton was led by Dionne Harris with a double-double in her 1st game as a Cougar with 23 points and 14 rebounds – 13 offensively. Christina Caddy added 19 points and Netayna Jackson added 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double as well in her Barton debut. Also scoring in double figures were Jade Glunz and Shea Shoemaker with 11 each.
Cerissa McMillan led Barton with 8 assists and 4 steals. She was joined at 4 steals by Harris and Caddy. The Cougars forced 32 turnovers in the game but committed 19 of their own.
Barton will get 10 days off before returning for the talented classic. The Cougars will take on Coffeyville and Independence in the classic while Cloud County will also participate against the two Jayhawk East schools. Cloud and Indy will tip at 1 pm Friday, November 12 while Barton and Coffeyville will go at 5 pm. Saturday will see Cloud and Coffeyville at 1 pm with Barton and Indy tipping at 5 pm. The men will also host a classic during the weekend.
