Cougars keep on rolling, beat Cloud 80-71 for 3rd straight West win

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team continued to score points Wednesday night defeating Cloud County 80-71 at the Barton Gym for its 3rd straight win in Jayhawk West action. It was also the 3rd straight time the suddenly potent offense of the Cougars reached the 80-point mark in West play. The 80 points were a 24-point improvement from a 66-56 loss at Cloud to start the conference season. The win moved Barton into 3rd place in the West. Barton is now 6-3 in West and 14-9 overall. Cloud fell to 4th place at 5-3 and 14-6. Seward will visit the Barton Gym Saturday in another battle against a team vying for a home playoff game with its 5-4 West record and 15-8 overall mark. Tip for Homecoming night is set for 6 pm.

Highlights
The Cougars rode a 14-1 scoring run midway through the opening to win over the Thunderbirds. Barton trailed 25-19 following jumper by the Thunderbirds for Cloud’s biggest lead of the game. Then next trip down the floor Cerissa McMillan drained 3-pointer and long-range shooting barrage was on. Dionne Harris cut the lead to 25-24 with a layup with 10 minutes to play and Christina Caddy gave Barton a 27-25 lead with a 3 at the 8:39 mark.

Cloud broke the 8-0 run with a free throws before Raven Adams joined in on the 3-point parade at the 7:11 mark for a 30-26 lead with grew to 33-26 when Shea Shoemaker hit a 3-pointer as four different Cougars knocked down a 3 during the 14-1 run that gave Barton the lead for good. The Cougars led 43-35 at halftime on the strength of 7-of-12 shooting behind the arc in the half – and that is with Barton missing its final 2 treys.

Barton pushed the lead to double digits at 49-38 early in the 2nd half before Cloud rallied to cut the lead to 4 with 15 minutes left. Cloud would get as close as 3 before Barton pushed the lead back to double digits 66-55 with 7:12 to play. Barton would never lead by less than 7 the rest of the way and much of the final 7 minutes was played with Barton holding a double-digit lead.

Caddy led Barton with 18 points and 3 steals. Adams and Alisha Fanshier each added 16 with Fanshier handing out 7 assists as well. Fanshier connected on 9-of-9 free throws with Barton as a team hitting 22-of-26 from the charity stripe. Klara Wischer scored 19 and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Cloud. It was the most points scored on Cloud all season with the previous high of 78 by Butler. Those are the only two times Cloud has allowed more than 66 points all season.

The 3 straight West games with 80 or more points scored is the 1st time the Cougars have done that since the 2007-08 season. Barton will attempt to make it 4 straight Saturday, but that won’t be an easy task. Seward comes to the Barton Gym off a loss to No 14 Hutchinson Wednesday in a game the Saints led most of the way. The Saints haven’t given up 80 points all season either.
