Barton picks up Jayhawk West win with 92-49 victory over Colby

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team notched its 1st Jayhawk West win Wednesday night in the conference home opener at the Barton Gym. The Cougars rolled to a 92-49 win over Dodge City in a contest that featured some dazzling runs by Barton. Barton is now 1-2 in the Jayhawk West and 8-8 overall this season while Dodge falls to 0-3 and 7-10. The Cougars will look to make it 2 straight and pick up their 1st road win in West play Saturday when they travel to Garden City for a 5:30 pm tip. Garden will bring a 0-2 conference record and 10-6 overall mark to the contest.

Highlights
The Cougars put the game out of reach in the opening half as they put together some remarkable runs that stretched into the opening minutes of the 2nd half. In fact, over an 18-minute stretch of basketball Barton outscored Dodge 55-5.

The Cougars trailed 9-3 with less than 15 minutes to play in the opening half when Netanya Jackson hit a jumper for the Cougars. It was Barton’s 1st field goal of the game and it took more than 5 minutes to achieve. It wouldn’t take 5 more minutes for the next.

The Jackson jumper started a 20-0 run by Barton over the next 5 minutes, capped by another Jackson jumper for a 23-9 lead. After a Dodge City basket with 8:55 to play that broke a drought of nearly 8 minutes the Cougars went back to work. This time it was a 19-0 run that gave the Cougars a commanding 42-11 lead with just less than 5 minutes to play. The 39-2 run was capped by fast-break layup by Alisha Fanshier off a defensive rebound by Raven Adams, who found Fanshier streaking to the other end.

The teams would trade points to 46-14 before Barton capped the 55-5 segment with another 12-0 run that finished the opening half and started the 2nd half. The Cougars led at 50-14 at half then scored the 1st 8 points of the 2nd half in 3 minutes for a 58-14 lead with 17:18 to play in the game. Barton would get the lead over 50 at 71-19 and as high as 53 at 79-26.

With only 7 players able to suit up for the Cougars all 7 received plenty of time on the floor with 5 scoring in double figures. Christina Caddy led Barton with a career-high 25 points followed by Jackson who ended with a career-high as well at 23. Fanshier added 15 as did Cerissa McMillan in a career-high night for the Salina freshman as well. McMillan was also a pest to the Dodge City guards, recording 6 steals – 5 during the 1st half with many coming before the Conquistadors crossed half court. McMillan also finished with 5 assists. With the limited number of players McMillan played a career-high 34 minutes as did freshman guard Devan Boeger who logged a team-high 37 minutes.

Dionne Harris and Jackson each had 9 rebounds for the Cougars. Jackson added career highs with 7 blocks and 5 assists. Fanshier led Barton with 6 assists and added 8 rebounds. Adams finished with 10 points and 4 assists.

The Cougars could get a big boost in their effort to move into the top half of the West with a road win this weekend at Garden City. Garden opened the West with a home loss to Butler before a road loss at No 17 Hutchinson Wednesday.
