Barton survives foul troubles; rallies for 72-70 win at Garden

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team picked up a road win Saturday in the Jayhawk West with a 72-70 win over Garden City at the Perryman Athletic Complex. Barton – suiting up only 8 players – had two foul out in the game and two more on the verge but survived for the win in a game that saw 49 fouls whistled between the two teams. Barton is now 2-2 in the West and has back-to-back wins after a 0-2 start. The Cougars are 9-8 overall while Garden fell to 0-3 in the West and 10-7 overall. Barton will be home Monday to take on Butler, who is tied for the West lead at 3-0 after knocking off No 17 Hutchinson Saturday in El Dorado.

Highlights
Barton was in the lead most the contest after jumping to a 13-0 lead out of the gates. Alisha Fanshier scored 7 while Dionne Harris, Christina Caddy and Raven Adams all added layups for the 13-0 lead 5 minutes in. Garden came back to tie the game at 18-all but Barton pulled back out to a 35-29 halftime lead capped by a 3-point play from Harris with just 2 seconds left in the half.

Fouls issues really started to mount in the 2nd half while Barton continued to build its lead as high as 9 early in the half. But Harris fouled out with 10 minutes to play and Fanshier followed with 6 minutes left with Barton up just 59-58. Christina Caddy and Netanya Jackson each had 4 fouls at the time for Barton. Garden City pulled out to a 4-point lead on 2 occasions in the final 4 minutes, the latest at 68-64 with 2:48 to play. But Raven Adams knocked down a jumper with 2:34 left and added two free throws with 1:59 to play to tie the game 68-all.

Garden City took a 70-68 lead with 1:43 left on a Jasmine Troup jumper but Caddy immediately answered with a layup on a pass from Jackson in the paint to even the score at 70-all. Following a Garden turnover Caddy returned the favor, finding Jackson for a jumper in the paint with 29 seconds left and a 72-70. That would prove to be difference after Barton survived two shots by Garden to tie or take the lead in the final 12 seconds.

Caddy led Barton with 17 points followed by Jackson with 14 and Fanshier with 11. Raven Adams led Barton with 9 rebounds. The Cougars turned the ball over a season-low 12 times in the win and hit 46% from the field. That helped outset a 55-36 rebound advantage for the Broncbusters. Troup and Marisela Rodriguez each scored 17 to lead Garden.

The Cougars will look to hand Butler its 1st West loss of the year and string together a 3-game winning streak of their own Monday night in a short turnaround contest with the Grizzlies. In Butler’s win over Hutchinson Saturday, the Grizzlies held Hutch to less than 30 percent shooting from the floor.
