Release by Mike Marzolf
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team kept the winning train rolling along with a 69-55 Jayhawk West win over Garden City Thursday night at the Barton Gym. The win was the 7th straight overall and 6th straight in Jayhawk West action. Barton is now 9-3 in the West and 17-9 overall while Garden City fell to 3-8 and 13-12. The Cougars will get a big showdown for 2nd place in the West Saturday when they travel to El Dorado to take on Butler. The winner of that game will be 2nd alone in the West.
Highlights
Barton was in control most of the night against the visiting Broncbusters. The Cougars took the lead for good just 4 minutes into the contest and were threatened just a couple of times after that.
The Cougars built a 19-8 lead in the opening half following a 14-2 run. Garden would work its way back into the game, cutting the lead to as low as a single digit at 26-25 with 1:32 left in the opening half. Barton pushed the lead back to 32-28 at halftime as Christina Caddy beat the buzzer with jumper for the Cougars.
The Cougars extended their lead with a 7-0 run in the early stages of the 2nd half for a 43-33 advantage. Barton would lead by double digits nearly the entire final 14 minutes of the contest, finishing with the 14-point win and a season sweep of the Broncbusters.
Caddy led the Cougars with 20 points, hitting 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. Shea Shoemaker and Alisha Fanshier each added 16 points in a very different fashion. For the sophomore Fanshier, it was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line for a bulk of her 16. That was just one shy of an 11-for-11 effort by both Wendy Okeson and Tami Cornelson as the most free throws made in a game without a miss at Barton.
For the freshman Shoemaker, it was a 5-of-7 night shooting the ball – 3-of-4 on 3-pointers – that propelled her to her 2nd straight double digit game. It has also been the two highest scoring games as the Minneapolis-native tossed in 18 at Dodge Monday.
The Cougars (9-3) are currently in 2nd in the West with Butler 1/2 game back at 8-3. Cloud is also in the mix at 7-3. Barton beat Butler earlier this year in Great Bend by a slim 74-70 score. Hutchinson is starting to distance itself from the rest of the conference with an 11-1 record in the West. Seward (7-5) is also among the three teams with 3 losses vying for a top 4 finish and a home court game to open Region VI playoff action. Tip for the contest Saturday is set for 5:30 pm at the Power Plant.
