Barton season ends with loss to Independence for 3rd straight season

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team once again had its season ended by the Independence Pirates in Region VI play, this time in quarterfinal action at Koch Arena in Wichita Friday afternoon. The Cougars could not survive a 3-point barrage from the Pirates, falling 84-67 to end the season with a 21-11 record. It was a season that saw the Cougars tie for 2nd in the Jayhawk West and return to the 20-win plateau. Independence lost its semifinal contest to Hutchinson and ended its season at 30-3.

Highlights
The Cougars were right where they wanted to be with the No 23 Pirates midway through the opening half of play leading 23-19 with just more than 9 minutes to play in the half. In fact, Barton had 3 opportunities to increase its lead but failed to do so. With just less than 8 minutes to play in the half Indy began its assault. Jennifer Jones hit a jumper then Elaine Tastove started the long-ball barrage with a 3-pointer for a 24-23 Indy lead. Indy would add a pair of 3-pointers in the next couple minutes and push the lead to 32-27.

Indy wasn’t done just yet. The Pirates connected for two more 3-pointers in the final 2:30 of the half to build a 44-30 halftime lead and put themselves in control. It was a half that saw Indy knock down 9-of-21 3-point shots. In addition to the long distance shooting, Indy dominated the glass in the opening 20 minutes, grabbing 12 offensive rebounds and out-rebounding Barton 26-14.

The Pirates quickly put to rest the idea of a quick comeback to start the 2nd half for Barton. Indy rattled off the 1st 8 points to push the lead to 52-30 just 3 minutes into the half. The closest Barton would get after that would be 14 points.

Sophomore Alisha Fanshier led Barton in her final game as a Cougar with 16 points. Another sophomore wrapping up her career with Barton, Jara Shoemaker scored 11 for the Cougars. Freshman Netanya Jackson added 11 and led Barton with 6 rebounds. The final sophomore to end her season, Raven Adams, scored 9 and led Barton with 3 steals. Taylor Floyd had 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Pirates.
