Barton rolls by Pratt for 20th win; ends in 2nd place tie in Jayhawk West

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team closed out the regular season in style defeating Pratt 72-42 at the Barton Gym Saturday night in Great Bend. The win, coupled with a Cloud County loss to Jayhawk West champion Hutchinson, moved Barton into a 2nd place tie with the Cloud in the West standings. The Cougars closed out West play at 12-4, picking their 20th win of the season. Barton will head to post-season at 20-10. Pratt will enter the playoffs with a 13-17 overall record after going 3-13 in the West. Barton will take the No 3 seed from the West into Region VI action. The Cougars will host Labette, who finished 10-20 overall and 7-11 in the East. Free Admission for the 7 pm tip at the Barton Gym Tuesday to open the post-season.

Highlights
A long Pratt scoring drought in the opening half allowed Barton to put the contest away early on. The Cougars held the Beavers nearly 13 minutes without a point. Pratt had tied the game at 4-all with 15:44 to play and didn’t score again until 2:52 remained in the half. During that 13 minute stretch, Barton was able to score 23 straight to build a 27-4 lead. The Cougars closed out the half with a 34-10 lead. This on the heels of giving up just 11 in the opening half at Colby Wednesday night.

Pratt did score the opening 6 points of the 2nd half to cut the lead under 20 but that didn’t last long as Barton went on a 10-2 run to push it back over 20 where it stayed the rest of the night. The lead hit the 30-point mark midway through the 2nd half and went as high as 35.

Dionne Harris had a monster game for the Cougars, scoring 26 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in the win. Those were both career-high marks for the freshman as were her 6 steals. She was joined in double figures by Alisha Fanshier and Raven Adams as the sophomores each netted 12. Abbey Rudd was the only Beaver in double figures with 13.

Barton will host a Labette team the Cougars defeated by a 63-47 margin at the Barton Gym back in November at the Barton Booster Club Classic. The winner of that contest will play Friday in Wichita at a time to be announced after the 1st round games have concluded. The Barton-Labette winner will face the winner of the Independence-Colby game.
