Facing an eight point deficit in the first six minutes, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team went on a 23-2 run in the next ten minutes then held on late to defeat Colby Community College 61-58 Wednesday night in Colby. The Lady Cougars led by fourteen at the break and as much as seventeen with 18:15 to play before Colby inched their way back into the contest. The Lady Trojans actually took the lead twice at the 3:44 and 2:25 marks left to play but timely free throws and defensive pressure helped the Lady Cougars get the Jayhawk West win. With the victory Barton improves to 13-7 on the season and evens their conference mark at 3-3. Barton will next play Pratt Community College Saturday at 6:00pm at the Barton Gym.
Scoring
The Lady Cougars only placed two players in double-digit scoring but had one of their most balanced scoring outputs as nine players scored at least four points. Dionne Harris scored eleven of her thirteen points in the second half while only playing fourteen minutes due to early foul trouble. Harris also led the team in rebounding with five as four other Lady Cougars grabbed four rebounds each. Shea Shoemaker also scored thirteen points and led the team in assists with six.
Colby had three players lead the way highlighted by Marie McAbee’s game high seventeen points on 7-of-10 shooting. Liga Vente scored thirteen to go along with her team high six rebounds and Cheyenne Eisenhour finished with eleven while also collecting five steals. Those three connected on 15-of-26 shots for forty-one of Colby’s points while the remainder of the team finished 6-for-30 from the field.
Despite being outscored 12-5 on fast break points, the Lady Cougars bench countered with a 21-6 advantage. Barton shot 38.9% from the field with Colby shooting 37.5% with both teams effective from the free throw line shooting 77.8% and 86.7% respectively.
