Lady Cougars pick up first conference win on road at Dodge City

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team picked up their first conference win Saturday night in Dodge City.  The Lady Cougars fought back from an early seven point second half deficit to pick up the 71-64 victory.  Barton improves to 11-5 on the season and even their conference record at 1-1 while Dodge drops to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.  Barton will be back at home this Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. conference game against with Garden City.  Garden City, 9-7 on the season, lost its first conference game of the year 80-55 on Saturday to No. 3 Hutchinson.

Highlights
Barton scored the game’s first five points and built a ten point advantage midway through the first half at 15-5.  Dodge City, behind 4-of-9 three-point shooting, would outscore the Lady Cougars 24-11 in the last eleven minutes to take a 29-26 lead into the halftime break.

The Lady Conquistadors increased their lead to seven within the first two minutes of the second half before Barton finally started rolling.  The Lady Cougars would score the next seven points in the following two and a half minutes to tie the game at 35.  Dodge would fend off the Cougars and build back a four point lead at 48-44 but Barton answered with a 26-3 run in the next six minutes to take a 70-51 lead with 4:10 remaining.  Within that stretch and trailing by one with ten minutes to play, the Lady Cougars went on a 15-0 run to take command.

Even though Barton would be outscored 13-1 in the remaining four minutes, the Lady Cougars lead was too much for Dodge to overcome.

Scoring
In only her second game as a Lady Cougar and second overall game in almost two years, redshirt freshman Raven Anderson led Barton in scoring and recorded her first double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Blair Bloomfield scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting while Shea Shoemaker scored 11 on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting including 2-of-2 from 3-point distance.  Dionne Harris just missed a double-double as she finished with 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Je’nae Strong led Dodge City with 27 points while Laquaris Harris scored 10.

Barton shot 47% from the field including 54% in the second half while holding Dodge to 36%.  The Lady Cougars were also solid from 3-point territory as they made 4-of-5 in the second half to finish at 60% from long distance while Dodge finished 6-of-24 for 25%.
