The Barton Community College women’s basketball team opened its 2011-12 season with a 81-43 win over Bethany College JV Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The Lady Cougars held the Lady Swedes to 22 percent shooting and forced thirty turnovers in giving Darin Spence his first victory as the Barton Head Coach. Barton will take to the road this weekend traveling to Midland, Texas, for the Midland College Tip-Off Classic. The Lady Cougars will take on host and No. 3 ranked Midland College on Friday and Chochise College on Saturday. Barton will return home for a November 8 contest against the Tabor College junior varsity.
Highlights
Barton played all ten players with each contributing to the win. Leading the Lady Cougars in scoring and rebounds was sophomore Dionne Harris with a double-double to start the 2011-12 campaign as she scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. As a team Barton shot 41 percent on 33-of-79 shooting and outrebounded Bethany by twenty six which included a twenty board advantage on the offensive glass.
Joining Harris in double digit scoring were freshmen Blair Bloomfield and Taschell Phillips with 15 and 14 points respectively, while sophomore Netanya Jackson scored 10. Freshman Erin Copeland led Barton with eight assists and five steals.
Leading the Lady Swedes in scoring was Clarissa Garcia with 13 while Alex Delong also reached double figures as she finished with 10 points.
