The Barton Community College women’s soccer team earned a pair of Jayhawk Conference road wins this past weekend capturing shutout wins at Neosho County and Independence. The Cougars got out of Chanute Saturday night with a tight 2-0 win over Neosho then rolled to an 11-0 win at Independence Sunday afternoon. The wins move Barton to 5-0 in the Jayhawk Conference and 8-3 overall. The Cougars have not been scored upon in Jayhawk action yet. Barton will go for conference win No. 6 Wednesday when Garden City comes to Cougars Fields for a 2 pm kickoff.
Highlights
Barton scored in each half Saturday evening in the 2-0 win over Neosho. Shala Giardini made it 1-0 late in the opening half with a goal on a header from Jacqueline Gonzalez. Gonzalez scored the goal in the 2nd half from Lucero Viveros with 25 minutes left in the contest. Neosho put just 3 shots on goal during the contest. The Panthers fell to 3-3 in the region and 5-4 overall.
Barton got off to a sluggish start Sunday against winless Independence but picked up the play as the game went along in the 11-0 win. Danielle Saucedo scored 3 goals in the win and added an assist. Viveros scored twice with two assists while Gonzalez added two assists and a goal. Also scoring a goal were Giardini, Jessica Santacruz, Jordan Gallacher, Joan Daly, and Monica McCarthy.
Garden City will bring a 3-2 Region VI record to Barton along with a 6-2-1 mark overall. The Cougars are 1 of 3 teams currently unbeaten in the region along with No. 4 Johnson County and No. 8 Hutchinson. Hutch is 8-0 in the region and Johnson 5-0 like the Cougars. Butler is 4-1 with all other teams having at least 2 losses.
