Cougars record 3rd straight shutout of Jayhawk foe with 3-0 win over Cloud

The Barton Community College women’s soccer team has yet to allow a goal in Jayhawk Conference play, posting its 3rd straight shutout Wednesday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Cloud at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. Barton scored twice very early in the contest then added another 2nd half goal for the 3-0 margin. The Cougars have outscored their conference foes by a 19-0 count while going 3-0 in the Jayhawk. Barton is now 6-3 overall. Cloud is 5-3 in the Jayhawk and 7-3 overall. The Cougars will get a pair of road conference games this weekend playing at Neosho and Independence.

Highlights
The Cougars wasted very little time establishing control of the contest. With a 35 mph wind at its back Barton scored twice in the opening 10 minutes. Shala Giardini made it 1-0 when she scored on a long pass from Deedra Richard as she beat the keeper to the bottom right side of the net 7 minutes in. At the 10-minute mark Danielle Saucedo made it 2-0 when she gathered a rebound off a shot from Giardini and drove it home as Barton was on the attack the entire opening half. The Cougars got off 10 shots in the half to just 2 for the Thunderbirds who were bucking the gusty wind.

During the 2nd half Cloud held a shot advantage with the wind but only a slight one at 6-4. One of those 4 shots by Barton resulted in a goal as Saucedo scored for the 2nd time off a pass in the box from Jessica Santacruz that she put in the net off the keepers hand.

Barton will continue its trek though the Jayhawk this weekend with a quick turnaround in southeast Kansas. Barton will travel to Chanute to play Neosho Saturday at 5 pm to start things off. The Cougars will then take a short bus trip from Chanute to Independence for an 11 am kickoff Sunday morning. Neosho is currently 3-1 in the region and 5-2 overall during the season. Independence has struggled this year with a 0-6 region record and is also winless on the year at 0-7.
