Cougars take care of business; battle of Jayhawk unbeatens next up

The Barton Community College women’s soccer team did what it needed to do Wednesday afternoon at Cougar Fields in Great Bend – take care of business. With a possible match up of Jayhawk unbeatens looming Saturday when No. 4 Johnson County visits, the Cougars had to make sure not to look past a very good Garden City team. They didn’t. Barton got things rolling late in the opening half and kept it going as the Cougars won 4-0 over the Broncbusters. Barton is now 6-0 in the Jayhawk and will host Johnson Saturday at 1 pm. The Cavaliers will bring a 5-0 mark in the conference into town and a 9-1 overall record with them. Johnson’s lone this season is to No. 1 ranked Tyler College (Texas).

  Highlights
Barton got off to a sluggish start as Garden City made Barton work for good opportunities throughout the opening half. The Cougars finally broke through on a Shala Giardini goal with less than 5 minutes left in the opening half. Jordan Gallacher picked up the assist and Barton went to half up 1-0 putting just 4 shots on goal the opening 45 minutes.

The Cougars picked up where they left off at the end of the opening half by scoring 3 times in the 1st 20 minutes of the 2nd half. Giardini made it 2-0 on a breakaway 5 minutes into the half. Jessica Santacruz scored off a Lucero Viveros corner kick 10 minutes later to make it 3-0 and Danielle Saucedo drilled in a rebound off a Jacqueline Gonzalez shot 4 minutes later for a 4-0 lead with just more than 25 minutes left in the contest.

The shutout was the 6th straight in conference play as Barton has yet to be scored upon in the Jayhawk. The Cougars have outscored their 6 conference foes by a 37-0 count. Johnson has been equally impressive, outscoring Region VI foes 36-1. The Cavaliers and Cougars are 2 of 3 unbeaten teams in the Jayhawk with Hutchinson (8-0) unbeaten as well. Butler is also the mix at 5-1. Kick off for the contest Saturday at Cougar Fields is set for 1 pm.
