Release by Mike Marzolf
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team saw its hopes for a share of the Jayhawk Conference title slip away with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 6 ranked Hutchinson Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Great Bend. The Cougars 1-0 setback ended a week that saw Barton beat Hesston 5-0 and Allen County 6-0. Barton is now 8-2 in the Jayhawk with a pair of games left including a battle with Butler in El Dorado Tuesday. Butler is also 8-2 in the conference and the winner will more than likely carry the No. 3 seed into the opening round of next week’s Region VI playoffs. Hutch is in position to win the Jayhawk with its 11-0 mark in the conference and 16-0 overall records. Barton is 12-5 overall. Butler is 11-4 overall.
Highlights
A win over Hutchinson Sunday would have given Barton a chance to finish with a share of the Jayhawk title. But instead Hutchinson all but wrapped up the title. The lone goal for the Blue Dragons came just 14 minutes in when Miranda Holmes flicked the ball into the net on a cross in the box from Alicia Robinson. Barton struggled in the opening half as Hutchinson controlled play, getting off 11 shots to 0 for Barton. Things were more even in the 2nd half as Barton got off 5 shots – 2 on goal – to 6 for the Blue Dragons.
Barton had little trouble Tuesday in Hesston as the Cougars scored 5 times and the Larks got off just 2 shots. Danielle Saucedo scored 3 times and Shala Giardini had 3 assists and a goal to lead Barton. Jackie Gonzalez also scored a goal while Jessica Santacruz and Danielle Mayo each had an assist in the win.
Barton won 6-0 in Iola Thursday over Allen County as Saucedo scored two more times as did Giardini. Deedra Richard and Monica McCarthy also added goals. Jordan Gallacher led Barton with 2 assists with Giardini, Santacruz, Amanda Nueschafer and Rachel Ukena adding assists.
Barton could all but secure the No. 3 seed in the Region VI playoffs with a win at Butler Tuesday while a loss would most likely mean the No. 4 seed. Johnson is probably the 2 seed.
