The Barton Community College women’s soccer team took care of business Monday afternoon at Cougar Fields in Great Bend to start the post season. The Cougars, the No 4 seed in the Region VI tournament, earned a 2-0 win over No 5 seed Neosho County in 1st round play. That will set up a semifinal matchup with 3rd ranked and unbeaten Hutchinson in Topeka Saturday. The teams will play at 4 pm in Hummer Park. Barton is now 14-6 overall this year while Hutch is 18-0. Neosho ends its season with an 11-6-1 mark.
Highlights
Barton scored in the opening 10 minutes of play when Danielle Saucedo and Shala Giardini hooked up on thru ball that Giardini put past the Neosho keeper low left. The game remained 1-0 for the next 65 minutes. Barton was able to get some cushion when Danielle Mayo flicked the ball past the keeper on a pass in the box from Joan Daly.
Neosho actually outshot the Cougars by a 14-11 count but both teams put 6 shots on goal with Barton’s Corey LaMoureaux saving all 6 Panther attempts.
The Cougars now turn focus to a Hutch team that beat them 1-0 recently at Great Bend High School. Hutchinson has rolled to an unbeaten record this season, giving up a total of 7 goals and posting 13 shutouts. Hutchinson won its opening round contest 5-1 over No 8 seed Garden City.
Barton and Hutch will square off at 4 pm followed by the 2nd seed Johnson and 3rd seed Butler. Johnson, the NJCAA runner-up a year ago, is 16-2 this season while Butler is 13-4. That contest will kick off at 6:30 pm. The finals are set for Sunday at 2:30 pm.
