The Barton Community College women's soccer team saw its season come to an end today in Concordia as the Lady Cougars fell to Cloud County Community College 6-2 in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. Despite the loss, Barton completed its fifth straight winning season by finishing with 9-8-1 while Cloud continues to the region semifinals with a 15-4 record.
Barton couldn’t have started the game any better as Courtney Galliher beat the T-bird defense getting a pass from Jordan Gallacher to give Barton a 1-0 lead just twenty seconds into the game. The Lady Cougars, playing the latter portion of the regular season without some key players due to injuries, knew they would need a flawless performance to earn a return trip to the Region VI semi-finals. That hope was soon erased as the T-birds would score the next five goals before Barton could respond. The first coming eleven minutes into the game and another only two minutes later. Cloud would then get its third goal on a penalty kick with 26:44 to play in the first half followed by its fourth goal within the next minute. The T-birds five goal run would finally end with 21:30 remaining. Barton would then close the gap to three with 19:23 on the clock thanks to Gallacher free kick goal but couldn’t get any close as Cloud carried a 5-2 advantage into the break. In the second half the T-birds would put the game away with 4:35 remaining and ended the Lady Cougars season with the 6-2 loss.
“The season didn’t end the way we obviously would have wanted it to end,” said first-year Barton Women’s Soccer Head Coach Shawn Uhlenhake. “Despite challenges we’ve faced we still had a successful year and look forward to building upon that for next year.”
The Lady Cougars will lose ten sophomores who went 23-15-1 in their two yeas including last year’s Region VI semifinal finish. Barton will look to rebuild with its eight freshman and Coach Uhlenhake’s first full season of recruiting.
