The Barton Community College women's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season today by beating Hesston College 2-0. The Lady Cougars improve to 1-2 on the season after losing two games this past weekend. Barton will have the week off until they travel to Kansas City on September 6 to take on Maple Woods, MO.
Barton got on the scoreboard midway thru the first half as Deedra Richard found Jordan Gallacher at the top of the penalty circle. Gallacher launched the 60’ shot over a jumping Hesston goalkeeper Amber Mayer. The Lady Cougars stayed on the attack with numerous scoring opportunities but it wasn’t until 2:20 left in the half Barton would increase its lead to two. Gallacher, a sophomore from Murray, UT, sent a perfectly placed pass from the right wing into the penalty box where Wichita native Bailey Avery’s header found the net. As the turf temperature reached nearly 130 degrees, both teams weren’t able to score in the second half and Barton hung on for the shutout victory.
“It was nice to get the result and I truly believe the team deserved it,” said Barton Women’s Soccer Head Coach Shawn Uhlenhake. “They’ve had three tough matches in four days and today their hard work paid off and was rewarded with the win. It’s a small piece of what we are trying to do but our first win is a pretty crucial piece.”
