The Barton Community College women's soccer team battled through poor weather conditions and shut out Independence Community College 2-0 Saturday at Cougar Field. The win keeps the Lady Cougars tied for fourth place in the Jayhawk Conference at 6-3 and improves to 7-6 on the season. After a couple of days rest, Barton will play three games at home in four days in the week ahead starting with a non-conference game Tuesday at home against Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawa.
On a day of gusty winds, rain, and cooler temperatures, the two teams battled to a scoreless first half tie. Despite facing a stiff south wind and driving rain the Lady Cougars were still able to get off eleven shots but Independence goalkeeper Olivia Delaney was solid as she save four shots on goal. Equally impressive was Taylor Patzner who protected the Barton goal making two saves.
“I thought Independence came in ready to play and it took us some time to get into the game,” said Barton Women’s Soccer Head Coach Shawn Uhlenhake.
It wasn’t until the seventy-first minute of the game the Lady Cougars would get on the scoreboard as Jessica Rosenberg would find Rachel Ukena to put Barton up 1-0. Nine minutes later Great Bend’s Kaylee Kershner scored following a corner kick to give Barton their final 2-0 margin of victory.
“I give our girls credit though because at the end of the day they did get the win,” Uhlenhake said. “I’m proud they played through the poor weather conditions and kept working hard. It’s not always going to be pretty but a win is a win.”
The Lady Cougars begin their tough week of games on Tuesday against Northern Oklahoma followed by conference games against Allen County Community College on Wednesday and No. 5 nationally ranked Butler Community College on Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday’s game begin at 2:00pm while Friday’s game against Butler will begin at 4:00pm.
