Lady Cougars earn post-season honors

The Barton Community College women’s soccer team had six players and their coach selected to the 2012 Jayhawk All-Conference and All-Region teams released on Wednesday.  All selections were freshmen headlined by Bianca Barron, West Jordan, Utah, in earning first team honors while three Lady Cougars landed on the second team and two earned honorable mention honors.  Included on the list is first-year head coach Aaron Avila who earned the Coach of the Year honor in leading the Lady Cougars to a 15-4-1 record on the season.  Named to the second team were Olimpia Bonilla, Salt Lake City, Utah, Ruth Cazier, Topeka, Kansas, and Mariana Poveda, San Jose, Costa Rica.  Earning honorable mention honors were Hannah Fuchs, Columbus, Nebraska, and Emily Troll, Goddard, Kansas.

No. 17 Lady Cougars post third straight shutout, advance to Region VI semifinals

The No. 17 ranked Barton women’s soccer team advanced to the Region VI semifinals by defeating Neosho County Community College 2-0 Monday at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.  Defeating the Panthers for the second time this season by identical scores, the Lady Cougars improve to 15-3-1 on the season while ending Neosho’s season at 10-7-1.  Barton advances to the region semifinals against No. 7 ranked Hutchinson Community College at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Hummer Park in Topeka.  Hutchinson earned its semifinal berth with an 11-5 victory Monday against Cloud County Community College to improve to 15-1-0 on the season with its lone loss coming against No. 4 Butler Community College.  The Lady Cougars will be seeking its first win over Hutchinson since 2007 and look to avenge a 2-0 defeat to the Dragons at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex earlier this season.  MORE

No. 17 Lady Cougars secure third seed with 4-0 shutout to wrap up regular season; Barron reaches milestone

The No. 17 ranked Barton women’s soccer team wrapped up regular season play Wednesday with a shutout 4-0 victory over Kansas City Kansas Community College at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.   The Lady Cougars put two on the board each half, to earn the win and improve to 14-3-1 overall and 10-2-1 in conference while dropping KCK to 2-14-0 on the season and 2-11-0 in conference.  Freshman Bianca Barron, the reigning conference player of the week, contributed a goal each half to go along with a first-half assist to move into sole possession of second place in all-time season goals. The win also secures Barton’s number three seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament set to begin next week.  The Lady Cougars will host Neosho County Community College, whom they defeated 2-0 on September 22 in Chanute.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.  MORE

No. 19 Lady Cougars take care of business in 5-0 win over Garden City; take over sole possession of third place

The No. 19 ranked Barton women’s soccer team scored four first half goals and coasted for a 5-0 victory over Garden City Community College today at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.   After a somewhat slow start, the Lady Cougars scored three goals in seven minutes midway through the first half then added a fourth with five minutes to play before intermission.  Barton quickly put the game on ice less than two minutes into the second frame and cruised to the victory.  With the win Barton improves to 13-3-1 overall and 9-2-1 in conference while Garden City remains winless at 0-16-0 and 0-11-0 in conference.  The Lady Cougars take over sole possession of third place with one regular season game remaining Wednesday against Kansas City Kansas Community College.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.  MORE

No. 19 Lady Cougars rally from three goal deficit to win 7-4 over Cloud; Barron with five goals

Even though the Barton women’s soccer team trailed 4-1 at halftime, this year’s young but confident Lady Cougar squad never appeared rattled as they scored six second half goals to win 7-4 over Cloud County Community College Saturday at Cougar Field.  Aided by a gusty south wind in the first half, the Thunderbirds Georgia Walters capitalized as her four goals single-handedly gave Cloud the edge. In the second half the No. 19 Lady Cougars turned the tide limiting Cloud to zero shots on goal and scoring six of their own to earn the Jayhawk Conference victory.  Freshman Bianca Barron, who spent much of the first half on the bench due to injury, scored four of her five goals in the second half to aid in the win.  Barton improves to 12-3-1 on the season and 8-2-1 in conference play while Cloud drops to 8-9-0 overall and 6-5-0 in conference.   With two regular season games remaining, Barton can secure a third place tie in the conference standings by getting both of the wins this week, the first chance coming Monday at 4:00 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex against Garden City Community College.  The Lady Cougars will wrap up regular season play Wednesday against Kansas City Kansas Community College.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.  MORE

Solid first half propels #19 Lady Cougars to 3-1 win over Pratt 

The recently ranked Lady Cougars scored a Jayhawk Conference road victory today with a 3-1 win over Pratt Community College.  Ranked No. 19 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll released earlier this week, the Lady Cougars got two goals from team leading scorer Bianca Barron and one from fellow freshman Ruth Cazier to build a 3-0 halftime advantage.  Scoreless in the second half, Barton surrendered an early second half goal but prevailed to move into a third place tie in the conference standings with three games to play.  The Lady Cougars improve to 11-3-1 on the season and 7-2-1 in conference play while Pratt slips to 4-11-0 overall and 4-6-0 in conference.   Barton will look to shore up its conference standing this Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. contest versus Cloud County Community College at Cougar Soccer/Track Complex.

Lady Cougars add another upset to resume, knock off Johnson County 2-0

Week by week the Barton Community College women’s soccer team continues to solidify itself as one of the upper echelon teams in the Jayhawk Conference.  The Lady Cougars moved into sole possession of third place Wednesday at Cougar Field with a 2-0 shutout victory over national receiving votes Johnson County Community College.  Barton took advantage of opportune scoring opportunities and solid team defense to improve to 6-1-1 in conference play and 10-2-1 on the season while Johnson County falls to 5-3-0 and 7-6-1.   Trailing only the conference undefeated duo of No. 1 ranked Hutchinson Community College and No. 6 Butler Community College, the Lady Cougars will have its shot at the sixth ranked Grizzlies Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. in El Dorado.

Lady Cougars knock off No. 13 ranked Mavericks

Picking up their biggest win of the season, the Barton women’s soccer team stepped outside of conference play and upset the No. 13 ranked Mavericks of Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawa 4-2 today in Tonkawa, Oklahoma.   The Cougars trailed 1-0 six minutes into the contest but outscored the Mavericks 2-0 for the halftime advantage.  Barton scored the next two goals after intermission to increase their lead to 4-1 with fourteen minutes remaining but NOC quickly responded in the next thirty seconds to cut the lead back to two.  Barton kept the Mavericks out of the net the rest of the way and held on for 4-2 victory.  The Cougars improve to 9-2 on the season will return to action this Saturday for a key conference match with Cowley College.  Barton, 5-1 in conference, will host 6-2 Cowley College at 6:00 p.m. this Saturday at Great Bend High School.  MORE

Record performances key Cougars dominating 7-0 victory

Two freshmen added their names to the Barton Community College women’s soccer team record book as the Cougars dominated Independence Community College 7-0 Sunday in Independence.  Leading the Cougars in their highest output of the season were the freshmen duo of Bianca Barron and Mariana Poveda.  Barron, who leads the Barton attack and is the Cougars’ leading scorer, etched her name in the records with her five goal one assist performance.  The captain of the midfield, Poveda set up three of Barron’s goals to place her name in Barton history as well.  With the win the Cougars improved to 8-2 overall and kept pace for the upper echelon of the Jayhawk with a 5-1 record.  Independence fell to 1-6-1 on the season in 1-4-1 in conference play.   Barton will step away from conference play on Wednesday at they travel to No. 13 ranked Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawa.  MORE

Solid second half propels Lady Cougars to 2-0 win at Neosho

Getting a solid second half effort, the Lady Cougars picked up a 2-0 shutout victory Saturday over Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Ks.  After a scoreless first half, the Lady Cougars’ Molly Hausmann gave Barton a 1-0 lead 2:33 into the second half as she hammered home Mariana Poveda’s cross.  Barton added to its lead midway through the second half when Jessica Rosenberg scored off a Katelyn James pass to give Barton the two goal cushion with 13:23 to play.  With the victory the Lady Cougars improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1in conference play while Neosho drops to 4-4-1 overall and 3-4 in conference action.  Barton will be back in action Sunday as the Lady Cougars continue their two-day stay in southeast Kansas wrapping up the trip with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Independence Community College.

Lady Cougars lose 2-0 battle to No. 1 Hutchinson

The Lady Cougars dropped a hard-fought 2-0 contest to No. 1 ranked Hutchinson Community College Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field. The Lady Cougars’ setback snapped a five game winning streak and drops Barton to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play while Hutchinson remains unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in conference.  Barton’s next action will be this weekend as they will travel to southeast Kansas for back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.  The Lady Cougars will play Neosho Community College at 4:00 p.m. Saturday and wrap up the trip on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Independence Community College.  MORE

Winners of five straight, the Lady Cougars shut out Allen 5-0

Winners of five straight and remaining undefeated in conference play, the Lady Cougars shut out Allen Community College 5-0 Friday in Iola, KS.  Barton is one of three undefeated conference teams and sets up Tuesday’s big game with No. 1 Hutchinson Community College.  Barton improves to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference play while Allen remains winless at 0-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.  The Lady Cougars will host the top ranked Blue Dragons at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Cougar Field.  MORE

Lady Cougars pass first road test with 3-1 victory

The Barton women’s soccer team passed their first road test of the season by capturing a 3-1 victory today over Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville.  After a scoreless first half the Lady Cougars broke through as Barton’s leading scorer Bianca Barron took a Ruth Cazier pass to give Barton a 1-0 lead just ten minutes into the second half.  Coffeyville was able to tie the contest ten minutes later but Barron’s twenty yard blast over Coffeyville’s goalkeeper with just under twenty minutes to play gave Barton the lead for good.  Mariana Poveda capped the Lady Cougars’ victory with a nineteen yard free kick with just over three minutes remaining.  With the Jayhawk Conference win the Cougars improve to 2-0 and 5-1 overall while the Red Ravens conference mark drops to 1-1 and 2-3 overall.  The Lady Cougars will return to southeast Kansas on Friday to take on Allen Community College in a 2:00 p.m. contest in Iola. 

Lady Cougars pull out late 2-1 victory

The Lady Cougars stepped out of conference play today and captured a late-game 2-1 victory over Metropolitan Community College – Maple Woods at Cougar Field.  Barton outshot MCC 16-8 and 9-3 on goal to avenge last year’s 6-0 loss to the Monarchs.  The 4-1 Lady Cougars will have nearly a week away from competition until traveling next Wednesday to Coffeyville for a 5:00 p.m. conference game.  MORE

 

Barron’s hat trick propels Cougars to 5-1 conference opening victory

Bianca Barron’s three goals helped lead the Cougars to a conference opening 5-1 win over Dodge City Community College.  For the season Barron has 7 goals in four games as Barton improves to 3-1 on the season and drops Dodge City to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.  The Cougars will step back out of conference play today to take on Metropolitan Community College – Maple Woods at 2:00 p.m. at Cougar Field.  MORE

Horlacher earns women’s soccer weekly conference award

Lady Cougar goalkeeper Cecilee Horlacher has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week.   Horlacher, a freshman from St. George, Utah, made her first collegiate start and helped anchor a solid defensive effort by the Cougars in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Western Nebraska Community College.  Turning away three shots on goal, Horlacher saved two shots on goal in the game’s first forty-five minutes when Western Nebraska had a gusty south wind advantage to keep the game scoreless.  The Cougar defense was equally impressive giving up only five shots allowing just the three on goal.  Offensively the Cougars unleashed fifteen shots in the second half alone to cruise to the 4-0 victory.  MORE

Freshmen attack leads to 4-0 win over Western Nebraska

Slow out of the gate, the women’s soccer team turned a scoreless first half into a rout as the Cougars defeated Western Nebraska Community College 4-0 Sunday at Cougar Field.  The win was the second shutout for the Cougars on the season and earned freshman goalkeeper Cecilee Horlacher a birthday victory.   Doing the damage came from all freshman players as four different Cougars scored goals with assists also coming from four different players.  Mariana Poveda got the Cougars on the scoreboard first from Carolina Reza’s cross with 16:56 into the second half.  Barton would go on to score three more goals in the next twenty four minutes capped off from a Poveda corner kick finding Emily Troll on the back post for the final 4-0 margin with just under four minutes to play.  Bianca Barron, the Cougars leading goal scorer, scored her fourth on the season nine minutes after Poveda’s goal from Great Bend’s Berenice Prieto’s cross.  Katelyn James, joined Goddard High School teammate Troll in getting into the scoring column scoring her goal with nine minutes remaining after receiving a pass from fellow freshman Ruth Cazier.

Barton improves to 2-1-0 on the season and will open conference and region play this Wednesday.  The Cougars will take on Dodge City Community College at 2:00 p.m. at Cougar Field.  Barton will also have a non-conference game on Thursday against MCC-Maple Woods.  Game time for Thursday’s game is also 2:00 p.m. at Cougar Field.

Lady Cougar soccer gets rattled in 6-2 loss to Otero

The Barton women’s soccer team fell behind 4-0 in the first half on the way to losing 6-2 to Otero Junior College on Sunday at Cougar Field.  The Rattlers of Otero had built the four goal lead before the Lady Cougars were able to get on the board with a Biana Barron spectacular goal almost thirty seven minutes into the contest.  Barron, who now has three goals in two games, launched herself horizontal to score off a Hannah Fuchs blast from the right corner.  Otero struck back just three minutes later to take a 5-1 lead to intermission. Playing much better in the second half, Barton cut the deficit back to three eighteen minutes into the second half as Courtney Galliher scored from a Barron assist.  The Rattlers put the final tally on the board with eight minutes remaining to win by the final 6-2 margin.

Barton will have a week before returning to the field as they will take on Western Nebraska Community College on Sunday.  Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. at Cougar Field.

Lady Cougars open '12 season with shutout victory

The Barton women’s soccer team won their 2012 season opener today 2-0 over Northwest College.  The Lady Cougars scored once each half to revenge a defeat to the Trappers in the second game of last season.  Barton’s Bianca Barron scored both the goals with the first coming just six and a half minutes into the contest and her second coming midway through the second half.   The victory gave first year Head Coach Aaron Avila a welcomed birthday present in earning his first victory leading the Lady Cougars.  Barton will next play tomorrow against Otero Junior College in a 4:00 p.m. contest at the Cougar Soccer Complex.  Otero was a 5-0 victor over Northwest Kansas Technical College in today’s late contest.  Northwest College and Northwest Kansas Technical College will square off in Sunday’s 12:00 p.m. contest.  MORE

Cougars hosted Youth Soccer Camp

The 2012 Barton Youth Soccer Camp "Goals Galore" was held July 30 through August 2.

About 60 boys and girls between the ages of 4-13 years old from the Barton County area were in attendance to learn the game and work on both individual and team playing skills.

The Goals Galore Camp focused on the techniques of clean ball striking, passing, dribbling, one-on-one plan, and combination play.

Taught by Barton soccer coaches and players, emphasis was placed on teaching soccer skills in a fun and interactive environment.
