Run through the region ends for Cougars in championship game

Some games in sports a team performs in an unbeatable manner while the other team’s efforts seem futile in comparison.  Saturday’s Region VI Championship was one of those games as the No. 24 Barton Community College men’s basketball team ran across a hot No. 9 Hutchinson Community College team falling 74-57 at Park City’s Hartman Arena.   After getting a road quarterfinal win at Cowley College earlier in the week and a day removed after eliminating the Jayhawk West champions Seward County Community College, the Cougars got behind early and never recovered in concluding their season at 28-6.  The 31-3 Blue Dragons advance to represent Region VI for the first time since 1997 in the upcoming NJCAA Division I Tournament.

Racing out to a sixteen point lead in the game’s first seven plus minutes, the Blue Dragons made eight of their first ten shots including three-of-four behind the arc as Barton played catch up all night.  An 8-0 run by the Cougars cut the lead to eight in the next four minutes only to have Hutchinson counter with its own 7-0 run.  Barton would cut it to eight again later in the half but a five point answer by the Blue Dragons would lead to a 36-24 halftime advantage.

Much like the first half, Hutchinson was hot coming out of the locker room essentially sealing the victory in the half’s first seven minutes outscoring the Cougars by twelve.  The lead stayed in the twenties until a Trey Unrau baseline trey cut the deficit to the final 74-57 margin.

For the contest Hutchinson shot 50% from the field including a 5-for-9 performance behind the arc in the first half.  After a 31% dismal first half, the Cougars shot 43% in the second half to finish at 37% but knocked down only three of seventeen from behind the arc.  As hot as Hutchinson was from the outside, the Blue Dragons were just as effective inside the paint outscoring the Cougars by sixteen and winning the battle on the boards 41-35.

Sophomore Algie Key led Barton in scoring with fifteen as only two other Cougars reached double-digit scoring.  Sophomore Andell Cumberbatch scored thirteen and just missed a double-double leading Barton with nine rebounds while freshman Kevin Kuteyi scored ten.

Freshman Kadeem Allen led five Blue Dragons in double-digit scoring with fifteen points.  Sophomore A.J. Spencer scored fourteen while fellow sophomores D’Von Campbell and Rozell Nunn scored twelve while Alex Davis scored eleven.

Championship game bound, No. 24 Cougars knock off Jayhawk West champs

The No. 24 Barton Community College men’s basketball team’s eleven point run late in the semifinal contest was the difference in knocking out the defending Region VI Champion Seward County Community College 70-64 Friday at Park City’s Hartman Arena.  Trailing by five with five minutes remaining the Cougars held the Saints scoreless the next four minutes to build a six-point lead and hold on to the victory.  The win puts the 28-5 Cougars into the championship game of Region VI for the first time since 2007 while ending the Jayhawk West Champion Seward’s season at 25-8.  Barton will play in the 7:00 p.m. title game against No. 9 Hutchinson Community College as the 30-3 Blue Dragons easily dispatched No. 2 Coffeyville Community College 85-62 to reach its first region final since 1997.

Scoring twenty-two points to lead the Cougars, sophomore Algie Key moved into fourth place all-time in the Barton record books with 1199 points surpassing former University of Oklahoma standout Jackie Jones’ 1189 mark set from the 1987-89 seasons.  Key’s team leading five assists gives him 305 for his career moving into the fourth slot leaping over Cliff Moss’ 304 assist mark from the 1980-82 seasons.

Freshman Kevin Kuteyi came off the bench to score fifteen including 3-of-6 behind the arc while sophomore Andell Cumberbatch scored ten.  Sophomore Raphael Stephens and freshman Raheem Johnson led a 42-35 Barton rebounding edge with twelve and ten boards respectively.  Sophomore Turon Parker led the Cougars in steals with three while dishing out four assists to go along with eight points.

Sophomore Kaheem Ransom led the Saints with fourteen points and three assists.  Sophomore Jabari Peters and freshman Malcolm Hill-Bey scored eleven points each.

No. 24 Cougars charge back in advancing to region semifinals

Trailing by fourteen points in the first half, the No. 24 Barton Community College men’s basketball team came from behind to earn a 75-68 Region VI quarterfinal victory Tuesday night over Cowley College in Arkansas City.  Barton shot sixty percent and outscored the Tigers by eighteen in the second half in advancing to Friday’s semifinal round of the Region VI Tournament against Seward County Community College.  The 27-5 Cougars will play at 5:30 p.m. against the 25-7 Saints at Hartman Arena in Park City, KS with the winner advancing to Saturday’s championship.  Barton split the season series with the Jayhawk West champions winning 79-66 in Liberal to begin conference play then fell 71-60 at the Barton Gym on February 2.

Cougars steam roll Pratt to close out regular season home schedule

Opening the second half on a 24-2 run, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team cruised to a 78-56 victory over Pratt Community College Saturday at the Barton Gym.  Leading by fourteen at half, Barton built their lead to thirty-seven points in the first eight minutes of the second half to send the sophomore members of the team to victory in their last regular home game.  With the win Barton remains in the driver’s seat for the third seed in the Region VI Tournament by improving to 10-4 in conference and 23-5 overall.  Pratt drops to 4-10 in conference and 14-14 overall while seeing their hopes of a sixth seed dwindling.  The Cougars have a short turnaround as they head to Colby Community College on Sunday to play a rescheduled game from last Wednesday’s weather postponed game.  Game time for Sunday’s contest is 5:00pm at the Colby Community Building.

Freshman Raheem Johnson’s career high twenty-two points led three Cougars in double-digits as all but one of the eleven players scored.  Sophomore Andell Cumberbatch recorded his ninth double-double of the season scoring fifteen points and grabbing twelve rebounds.  Sophomore Algie Key added thirteen points and just missed his sixth double-double of the season scoring thirteen points and dishing out nine assists.  Sophomore Turon Parker scored eight points, dished out four assists, and tied Johnson for team honors with three blocks.

Cougars take down No. 4 Hutchinson

Barton Community College Algie Key looks to shoot over Hutchinson Community College’s Alex Davis in first half action Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. Key would go on to score eighteen points and moved into seventh place on the all-time Barton scoring list.Much like the earlier meeting this season, Wednesday’s game at the Barton Gym lived up to the hype of two nationally ranked teams as the nationally receiving votes Barton Community College men’s basketball team knocked off the No. 4 ranked Hutchinson Community College 87-81.  Scoring the most points against the Blue Dragons this season, Barton’s win improves their conference mark to 9-4 and 22-5 overall while Hutchinson drops to 10-2 and 24-2.   The result also creates excitement down the stretch in the Jayhawk West standings as Hutchinson’s loss drops them into a time with Seward County Community while Barton’s win kept their title hopes alive and solidified their edge for the third seed.  Concluding a four-game seven-day stretch, the Cougars will have a week away from competition until February 20 when Barton travels to Colby Community College for an 8:00 p.m. contest at the Colby Community Building.

The Cougars held a 9-6 early advantage until a 9-0 Hutchinson run quieted the raucous Barton Gym with 12:58 remaining.  Off the bench came Barton’s Shaka Thomas to drain a trey and start the Cougars on a 7-2 run to lead 21-17 at the midpoint.

Five points from reserve Kevin Kuteyi helped the Cougars build their largest lead of the first half at five with 6:21 to play.  With ten first half lead changes, the Blue Dragons put together a 8-2 run to reclaim their last lead of the half at 34-32 with 3:15 on the clock.

Back-to-back three pointers by Turon Parker and Kuteyi gave Barton a 42-38 lead into intermission as the Cougars closed out on a 10-4 run.
After being tied for the game’s eighth of thirteen times, Hutch’s Kadeem Allen dropped a trey then scored from a D’Von Campbell steal and assist to give Hutch its largest lead of five with 16:29 to play.  The Blue Dragons would again lead by five with 12:54 to play before things started to unravel for Hutch.

Hutch’s Alex Davis picked up a technical foul with eleven minutes to play, then as the Cougars held a one point advantage with a little over five minutes to play, Kadeem Allen picked up a personal and technical foul arguing a call.  With Barton’s Raphael Stephens planted in the lane, Allen’s shot released prior to contact resulting in the made basket but also resulted in three-of-four free throws by Stephens and Parker as the Cougars built a six point lead.

Reigning KJCCC player of the week Algie Key gave the Cougars it’s biggest lead at seven with 4:27 to play but a 5-0 Hutch run in the next minute cut the margin to two.  It would be as close as the Blue Dragons would come until things got crazy again with under a minute to play.

As Barton clung to a three point lead with twenty seconds remaining and Hutch in possession, the Blue Dragons’ Tafari Whittingham was whistled for a flagrant foul and subsequent ejection for head-butting the Cougars Raheem Johnson.  Johnson made one-of-two free throws then Key connected on two-of-four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Kevin Kuteyi led four Cougars in double-digits with nineteen, fittingly coming on the two-year anniversary of his mother’s death to cancer as Barton celebrated “Pink Out Night” for cancer awareness.  Raheem Johnson played huge for the Cougars posting his second career double-double with eighteen points and fourteen rebounds to go along with three blocks and a steal.  Lost in the celebration was the moving of Algie Key up the career scoring charts to seventh all-time as his eighteen points moved him past Eric Bush’s mark set in the 1999-01 seasons.  Turon Parker rounded out the double-digit scoring with fifteen points while dishing out three assists against one turnover in thirty-nine minutes of play.

Kadeem Allen’s eighteen points led four Dragons in double-digit scoring. D’Von Cambell, who didn’t play against the Cougars in their first meeting, scored sixteen while A.J. Spencer and Rozell Nunn scored fifteen and ten points respectively.

Key named Jayhawk Conference men’s basketball player of the week

Barton men's basketball player Algie KeyFor the second time this conference season, Barton Community College men’s basketball player Algie Key has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week.  The sophomore from Decatur, Georgia,  did whatever it took to help his No. 25 ranked Cougars get a couple of victories this past week.  In Wednesday’s victory over Dodge City, Key scored 30 points and grabbed 6 rebounds marking the third time this season and sixth in his career to surpass a thirty-point performance.  Saturday in the Cougars win over Garden City, Key adjusted his role to post a double-double ten point eleven rebound performance to go along with dishing out six assists marking the fifth time this season and twelfth of Key’s career to put up a double-double performance.  Sharing the weekly honor with Seward County Community College’s Kaheem Ransom, Key’s performances averaged 50% shooting from the field, 77.8% from the free throw line while averaging 20 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per contest.

For the season Key averages 18.3 points per game, grabs 6.3 rebounds, and leads the team dishing out 3.8 assists and two steals per contest.  Barton’s all-time leader in free throw attempts and made, Key’s 1092 career points rank him eighth all-time just eleven points from Eric Bush’s 1103 set during the 1999-01 seasons.  Barton will next play the conference leader and nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College on Wednesday as the Cougars will wrap up its four-game seven-day brutal stretch of the schedule.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Barton Gym.

Scoring drought dooms No. 25 Cougars at the Power Plant

Unable to score a field goal in the game’s final seven minutes, the No. 25 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team fell 61-57 to Butler Community College.  A devastating blow to Barton’s hopes of earning a top two seed in the region, the Cougars drop to 8-4 and 21-5 overall while Butler moves to within a half game of the Cougars for the third spot at 7-4 and 19-6 overall.   Barton will next play the conference leader and nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College on Wednesday as the Cougars will wrap up its four-game seven-day brutal stretch of the schedule.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Barton Gym.

Much like the women’s game earlier in the evening, Barton held a first ten minute advantage despite leading scorer Algie Key on the bench with two early fouls.  The Grizzlies then went on an 8-0 run in the next four minutes to grab a 26-19 lead.  The Cougars countered with a Kevin Kuteyi trey followed by a Key steal and dunk to cut the deficit to five with three minutes remaining.  Another 8-0 run by Butler to close the half increased the Grizzly lead to 39-28 into intermission.

The Cougars kept battling back in the second half and finally took the lead at 53-52 with 8:06 to play.  A Key bucket followed by a Raheem Johnson stick-back gave the Cougars its first lead in over twenty-one minutes of play.

A key stretch came with six minutes remaining when the Cougars held a 55-52 lead but missed multiple opportunities to increase the lead.  Butler capitalized by connecting on two free throws to seize back the momentum and draw within one.

A Shomari Triggs driving bank shot was the lone field goal scored in the last six minutes but it proved to be a difference maker as it gave Butler the lead for good at 58-56 with 1:21 to play.  The Cougars then committed a turnover and gave up a key offensive rebound resulting in two game clinching free throws by Butler’s Sean Osler.

Freshman Kevin Kuteyi came off the bench to lead the Cougars in scoring with a career high twenty-one points.  Key, despite playing a limited twenty-nine minutes, scored twelve and led the Cougars with three assists.  Raheem Johnson just missed posting a double-double with nine points and thirteen rebounds while Andell Cumberbatch grabbed eleven.   Shooting only 33% from the field as a team, the big three for the Cougars of Key, Cumberbatch, and Parker combined for only twenty-one points with on 8-of-30 shooting.

Triggs’ fourteen points was the lone Grizzly to reach double-figures but five other players scored seven or more points.  Osler led the Butler 43-40 rebound advantage by grabbing ten including two pivotal offensive rebounds in the game’s last two minutes.

Redemption day at the Barton Gym, No. 25 Cougars win by seventeen

It had been thirty-one days since the No. 25 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team suffered a disappointing loss at Garden City Community College.  Saturday at the Barton Gym the Cougars got a sense of redemption in easily handing the Broncbusters a 73-56 defeat.  With the win Barton keeps pace for a top two seed in the region with an 8-3 record and 21-4 on the season while dropping Garden City to a tie in the bottom of the standings at 2-9 and 10-15 overall.  The Cougars, in the midst of a four-game seven-day stretch, will travel to El Dorado on Monday to take on Butler Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Power Plant.   The Grizzlies, who upset No. 1 ranked Hutchinson on Saturday in the Sports Arena, enter Monday’s contest trailing Barton in the conference standings at 6-4 and 18-6 overall.

Andell Cumberbatch, who nearly put up double-doubles in the first half by scoring nine points and nine rebounds, started a Barton 6-0 run to get the Cougars out to a 15-9 lead seven minutes into the contest.  The Cougars then went on a 13-2 run in part due to Turon Parker’s fifteen first half points to open a lead that would increase to twenty-two before settling into a 44-25 halftime advantage.

After a 7-2 run to open the second half and increase the lead to twenty-four, the Cougars kept the Busters from getting any closer than sixteen points for much of the half.  Back-to-back steal and lay-ups by Garden City’s Chris Hall and Jade Cathey did draw the Busters to within thirteen with a minute to play but Parker and Algie Key made four free throws to seal the win.

Parker’s eighteen points led the Cougar scoring with Cumberbatch and Key adding double-double performances.  Cumberbatch grabbed sixteen rebounds to go along with fifteen points to record his seventh double-double in eleven conference games.  Coming off Wednesday’s thirty-point performance at Dodge, Key only scored ten points but dished out a game high six assists to go along with eleven rebounds to post his fourth double-double of the season.

Cathey led only two Broncbusters in double scoring with eighteen while also collecting a team high ten rebounds.  Coming off the bench Hall scored fifteen coming on 6-of-15 shooting from field.  Frank Agholor, who led the Busters in the team’s first meeting with twenty-two points, finished with only three points but led the team with four assists.

Second half run leads No. 25 ranked Cougars to conference road blowout over Dodge

For the last fourteen minutes the No. 25 Barton Community College men’s basketball team put the hammer down on Dodge City Community College and ran away with a 73-53 victory Wednesday at the United Wireless Arena.  Tied at 40 the Cougars went on a 26-2 run in a ten minute span to cruise to the win and keep within reach of the number two Jayhawk West seed improving to 7-3 in conference and 20-4 overall.  The loss drops Dodge City to 4-6 in conference and 12-12 overall.   The Cougars return home Saturday to take on Garden City Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

Algie Key’s thirty points led three Cougars in double-digit scoring.  It was the third time this season and sixth in his career Key reached the thirty-point plateau.  Turon Parke scored thirteen with a team high five assist to go along with three steals.  Shaka Thomas came off the bench to tie a career high eleven points.  Andell Cumberbatch just missed his seventh double-double in ten conference games scoring nine points to also lead the Cougars with thirteen rebounds.

Delvon Rencher and Aaron Tate led the Conquistadors with twelve and ten points respectively.

Conference crown slipping away as No. 19 Cougars lose to Seward

Trying to keep pace for the Jayhawk Conference West crown, Saturday’s game at the Barton gym separated the Barton Community College and Seward County Community College men’s basketball teams as both came in tied for second place.  For the fifth straight year the Saints came to the Cougars house and left with a victory in winning 71-60 and kept alive Seward’s outside chances of competing for the title.  With hopes of the crown fading with the loss but chances for a top two seed still in its sights, No. 19 Barton drops 6-3 in the West and 19-4 overall while nationally receiving votes Seward moves into sole possession of second place at 7-2 and 16-7 overall.  The Cougars travel to take on Dodge City Community College on Wednesday for an 8:00 p.m. tip at the United Wireless Arena.  Barton defeated Dodge City 84-52 at the Barton Gym earlier in the conference season.

With Seward leading 15-14 with a little over eleven minutes remaining in the half, the Saints outscored the Cougars 18-6 the rest of the way to lead 33-22 into the break.

After the Saints grew their lead to fourteen early in the second half, Barton started its comeback behind the big three of Andell Cumberbatch, Algie Key, and Turon Parker.  The three sophomore guards combined for twelve points during the Cougars 16-5 run to draw within three with 12:37 to play.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, it would be the closet Barton would get as the Saints would score ten of the next eleven points in the next three plus minutes to build the lead back to twelve at 53-41.

A Barton run of 7-0 to cut it to five at the 4:37 mark and a 7-3 run to cut it to four with two minutes to play had one thinking the Cougars could pull this one out.  But missed free throws, layups, and even missed dunks were just subtle signs this just wasn’t the Cougars’ night.

Shooting a dismal 25% from the arc, Barton was also outmuscled inside as Seward out rebounded the Cougars by seven and outscored them by eight points in the paint.

Getting his sixth double-double in nine conference games, Cumberbatch led the Cougars scoring seventeen points and grabbing a game high ten rebounds.  Key and Parker scored thirteen and ten respectively but the duo combined for a 7-out-of-27 performance from the field as the Cougars were only 33.9% from the field.  Key’s thirteen points brought his career mark to 1040 points and jumped him over Robert Whaley’s 1029 points (’01-03) and Carlton Baker’s 1034 points (’99-01) for eighth place all-time on the Barton career scoring chart.  Key will next chase down Eric Bush’s 1103 total set from the ’99-01 seasons for seventh place.

Jabari Peters led four Saints in double-figures with twenty, just missing a double-double as he pulled down a team high nine rebounds.  Kaheem Ransom added nineteen with Edson Avila and Malcolm Hill-Bey scoring sixteen and ten points respectively.

Defensive second half effort moves No. 19 Cougars into second place conference tie

Employing explosive runs and stifling second half defense, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team had little trouble in dispatching Cloud County Community College 60-41 Wednesday at the Barton Gym.   Opening the contest with a 21-5 run and sealing the victory with a 17-4 run, the Cougar defense was equally impressive holding the T-birds to seventeen second half points, six coming in the game’s final nine minutes.  Concluding the first half of the conference season in second place at 6-2 in the Jayhawk West and 19-3 overall, Barton drops Cloud to sixth place at 3-5 and 12-10 on the season.  The Cougars begin the second round of conference play on Saturday as they host Seward County Community College, who is also tied with the Cougars in the standings.  Game time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Barton Gym.

After a subpar performance in Barton’s last outing, Turon Parker bounced back to lead the Cougars in scoring with fifteen points and three assists.  Algie Key, who sits in tenth place all-time in the Barton record books, moved to within five points of ninth with his thirteen point effort.  Andell Cumberbatch recorded his fifth double-double of the conference season scoring thirteen points and grabbing a career high seventeen points.  Coming off the bench, Shaka Thomas sparked the Cougars’ decisive 17-4 second half run dishing out two assists while knocking down two treys to finish with six points.

Edward Dyson led only two Cloud players in double digits with fifteen while Gerrae Williams scored thirteen.  James Williams led the T-birds in rebounding with twelve.

No. 19 Cougars escape with overtime road victory in Pratt

For the third time in four trips to the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena, the Barton Community College and Pratt Community College men’s basketball teams went to overtime and for the fifth straight year the Cougars picked up the victory winning 62-60 on Saturday.  Barton improves to 5-2 in conference play and 18-3 overall while Pratt drops to 2-5 in conference play and 12-9 overall.  The Cougars next two games will be at the Barton Gym beginning on Wednesday against Cloud County Community College then Saturday against Seward County Community College.  Both contests scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Barton trailed by six at the midway point of the first half until a Cougars’ 10-0 run put them ahead 18-14 with four to play.  Trading baskets the rest of the half Barton went into intermission with a slim 24-22 lead.

Tied at thirty-one the Beavers scored six straight and maintained the lead to the media timeout at 9:46.  After the break the Cougars went on a 6-0 run keyed by an Andell Cumberbatch stick-back and Algie Key hoop-n-harm to draw the Cougars to within two with seven and half to play.

Barton battled back to take its first lead since the second half on an inside move by Dominique Wilson but Pratt responded to regain the lead 50-49 with 4:33 to play.

Tied at 53 and 1:56 to play and coming out of a Pratt timeout, the Beavers seem to grab momentum as Kazmere Boyd slammed home a back door alley-oop dunk from Randall Rogers.  Cumberbatch answered back for the Cougars twenty seconds later working inside to tie the contest.   After another Boyd basket with just under a minute to play, Key sliced through the lane for the game’s’ tenth tie with just thirty-seven seconds remaining.

Needing a defensive stand to eliminate potential defeat, the Cougars forced the Beavers to launch a deep off-balance three-point shot before the shot clock expired that glanced off the rim and out of bounds.  With only 5.7 seconds remaining, Key drove the ball through the lane getting it knocked away into the hands of Raheem Johnson.  Johnson immediately took it up and stuck it in but time expired before the ball could release his hands and the game was headed to overtime.

With the Cougars clinging to a 61-60 lead and thirty-six seconds remaining, Turon Parker stole the ball from Boyd giving Barton the chance to preserve the victory.   Key, who made 8-of-13 free throws on the night, made the second of his two with twenty-two seconds giving Pratt one last opportunity for the tie or win.

Much like the waning seconds of regulation and needing one last defensive stop, the Cougars’ pressure defense kept the Beavers from getting a good shot off and Key snagged the rebound and ran out the clock to secure Barton’s fifth straight win in Pratt.

Key and Cumberbatch again led the Cougars in scoring and were the only two to reach double-figures.  Key recorded his fourth double-double of the season scoring twenty-two points to go along with a game leading eleven rebounds.  Cumberbatch just missed his fifth double-double in seven conference games in scoring fifteen points and nine rebounds.

Pratt’s DeShun Roberts and Randall Rogers led the Beaver charge scoring fourteen points each with Kazmere Boyd scoring ten.

No. 19 Cougars rededicate in 92-65 win over Colby

Barton’s Dominique Wilson slams over Colby Community College’s Cody Sluder in first half action of Barton’s 92-65 win. A week removed from falling by two at the nation’s top ranked team, the No. 19 Barton Community College men’s basketball team cruised to a 92-65 victory over Colby Community College Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.   Barton improves to 4-2 in conference play and 17-3 overall while keeping Colby winless in conference play at 0-7 and dropping the Trojans to 9-12 overall.  The Cougars return to the Jayhawk road on Saturday to play Pratt Community College in a 8:00 p.m. conference tilt at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena.

With a slim 19-17 lead at the midpoint, the Cougars outscored Colby 26-10 in the last ten minutes to lead 45-27 at halftime.  Sophomore guards Andell Cumberbatch and Algie Key led the charge with seventeen and fourteen points respectively as the Cougars turned an eleven to one turnover advantage to a sixteen point advantage.

The Cougars remained in full control throughout the second half and led by as many as 29 late in the contest.

In a brief halftime ceremony, the official dedication of Barton’s new basketball court took place honoring the contributions of Dr. L.T. and Sheila Fleske.  Barton recently installed a new maple floor through the financial generosity of the Fleske family.

Sophomore guards Andell Cumberbatch and Algie Key had big nights for the Cougars leading the charge with twenty-seven points each.   Cumberbatch, who was 4-of-5 from behind the arc, also recorded his fourth double-double in six conference games as he grabbed twelve rebounds to lead all players.  Freshman guard Kevin Kuteyi also reached double-figures in scoring fourteen.  Key led the team in assists with six while also tying teammate Rapheal Stephens for the team lead in steals with four.

Terry Starks came off the Colby bench to score nineteen in leading three Trojans in double-digit scoring.  Cody Sluder scored seventeen while John Clarke scored ten.  Starks led the Trojans in assists with five while Sluder led the team with two blocks and two steals.  Colby’s leading scorers Jeremiah Ingram and Kris Rolle were held to a combined fourteen points below their average.  Rolle, who leads the Jayhawk West in rebounds at 13.6 per game, was also held to only five total rebounds as the Cougars outrebounded Colby 38-16 including a 18-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

Comeback falls short as No. 13 Cougars lose 79-77 battle with No. 1 Hutchinson

Wednesday’s game at the Sports Arena lived up to the expectations of two nationally ranked teams all the way up to the final buzzer. Unfortunately for the No. 13 Barton Community College men’s basketball team, they were on the short end of most of the opportunities as the Cougars last second three-point attempt missed its mark and the nation’s top ranked Hutchinson Community College won the Jayhawk West battle 79-77.   The loss drops Barton to 3-2 in conference play and 16-3 overall while Hutchinson improves to 4-0 and 18-0.   The Cougars will have a week off from action before hosting Colby Community College on Wednesday January 23 at the Barton Gym.  Game time is 7:30 p.m. for the conference matchup with a special court dedication ceremony honoring the contributions of Dr. L.T. and Sheila Fleske taking place at halftime.

The opening ten minutes featured seven lead changes until a 14-4 Hutchinson run gave Hutch its biggest lead of the half at 29-21 with 8:24 to play.  Back-to-back inside buckets by Dominique Wilson brought the Cougars to within three points twice late in the first half but Hutch took a 38-33 lead to the break.

A quick 8-0 run by the Dragons to start the second half created a double-digit separation between the two teams for most of the second half.   With Hutchinson leading 72-63 with 3:37 to play, Barton mounted its come-back leading to a frantic last twenty-one seconds.
Following an A.J. Spencer free throw, Algie Key was quickly fouled in the back court by Rozell Nunn.  Making his first free throw, Key missed the second but was rebounded by Raphael Stephens as the Cougars trailed by four.  Following a timeout, Kevin Kuteyi drained a trey from the top of the arc and the Cougars found themselves only down one with fourteen seconds to play.

With Hutch up 78-77, the Dragons Kadeem Allen missed two free throws giving Barton the opportunity to take the lead.  Having numbers on the fast break Barton was unable to convert turning the ball back over to Hutch with five seconds remaining.  Sending Allen back to the Dragon free throw line, Allen made the first but missed the second setting up a running Kuteyi desperation three-point attempt from well behind the arc.  The ball sailed high of the goal as time expired and Hutchinson survived with the 79-77 win.

Turon Parker led four Cougars in double figures with twenty-one almost single handily keeping Barton in the game scoring seventeen of his points in the second half.  Kevin Kuteyi scored sixteen including 3-of-5 from behind the arc while Dominique Wilson dropped twelve as both players helped Barton to a thirty-one to nine scoring advantage coming from the bench.  Andell Cumberbatch scored ten points to round out the Cougars’ double-digit scoring with Raphael Stephens leading all participants with eleven rebounds.  Algie Key, who was held to six points including only one point in the second half, led all players with six assists.

Kadeem Allen, the reigning KJCCC player of the week, led four Dragons in double-digit scoring with twenty-two points.  Alex Davis scored seventeen with Tafari Whittingham and A.J. Spencer scoring thirteen and ten points respectively.

Explosive second half erase first half deficit as No. 9 Cougars dispatch Butler 73-64

Barton’s Dominique Wilson fouled by Butler Community College’s Jordan Madrid-Andrew in first half action of Barton’s 73-64 winErasing a five-point halftime deficit with a forty-five second half outburst, the No. 9 Barton Community College men’s basketball team defeated Butler Community College 73-64 at the Barton Gym Saturday night.  The Jayhawk West battle was two tales of halves as the Cougars heated up for 54.5% shooting and outscored the Grizzlies by twenty-four points in the second half at the free throw line.  Concluding their four-game seven-day stretch Barton improves to 3-1 in conference play and 16-2 overall while Butler drops to 1-2 and 13-4 overall.  The Cougars will face their biggest test of the season on Wednesday as they travel to Hutchinson to take on the undefeated No. 2 ranked Blue Dragons at 7:30 p.m at the Sports Arena.  Hutchinson, 3-0 in conference and 17-0 overall, are expected to move into the nation’s top spot this week with the release of the latest NJCAA poll.

Cold shooting dooms Cougars in road conference loss

Never able to find its rhythm nor able to convert opportunities, the No. 9 Barton Community College men’s basketball team fell 66-47 to Garden City Community College Wednesday in Garden City.   The loss drops Barton to 2-1 in conference play and 15-2 overall while Garden City improves to 1-2 and 9-8.  The Cougars will conclude their four-game seven-day stretch Saturday as Butler Community College comes to the Barton Gym for a 7:30 p.m. contest.  Butler, who received votes in this week’s NJCAA poll, lost at home Wednesday night 81-67 to No. 2 ranked Hutchinson to fall to 1-1 and 13-3.

Both teams struggled in the game’s first twenty minutes shooting a combined thirty-three percent on eighteen-of-fifty-four.  Four points coming from Algie Key and two from Turon Parker gave Barton its largest lead of the game at 19-13 with 5:23 to play in the first half.  Key, who was selected as the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week, produced most of the Cougar offense in the first half scoring nine points as Barton led 23-22 at intermission.

Barton increased its lead to five on a Key layup followed by two free throws from Parker but Garden went on a 12-2 run to take a 37-30 lead with 14:22 to play.  Barton cut it to three twice midway through the half but was outscored 24-8 in the games last ten minutes to suffer its fourth lowest output in the modern era of Barton men’s basketball.

The Cougars had two player reach double figures as Algie Key scored nineteen while Andell Cumberbatch just missed his third double-double in a row finishing with ten points and nine rebounds.  Despite an off-shooting night for Turon Parker, the sophomore from Ohio led the Cougars in assists dishing out five of Barton’s nine total.

Frank Agholor led the Busters with twenty-two with teammate Chris Hall finishing close behind with twenty.  Joe Ebondo led in rebounding with eleven.

Key named Jayhawk Conference men’s basketball player of the week

Barton Community College men’s basketball player Algie Key has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week.  The sophomore from Decatur, Georgia, put together three solid games for No. 9 ranked Barton Community College averaging nineteen points and over eight rebounds.  Included in his week’s performance was helping to lead the Cougars to a conference opening 79-66 win at pre-season conference favorite Seward County and snapping a six-game losing streak to the Saints. Despite the Cougars falling from the unbeaten in their overtime loss to Paris Junior College earlier in the week, Key was able to record his third double-double of the season and tenth of his career having just missed another double-double the previous night.  Additionally for the week, Key averaged over three-and-a-half assists and two steals per game.

For the season Key averages just shy of nineteen points at 18.9 per game while grabbing 6.8 rebounds and dishing out four assists with over two steals in leading the Cougars to a 15-1 start and a top ten national ranking.  The Cougars take to the road Wednesday to take on Garden City Community College before returning home for a Saturday contest against Butler Community College.  Game time for Wednesday’s contest is 7:30 p.m. at Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex.

#9 Cougars get defensive effort in running away with 84-52 win

Two days after picking up an important road conference victory, the No. 9 Barton Community College men’s basketball team showed no effects as they clamped down defensively to run away with a 84-52 victory over Dodge City Community College Monday at the Barton Gym.   , Barton improves to 15-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Jayhawk West and held the Jayhawk West’s leading scorer Vic Adams to twelve points below his average and dropped Dodge to 0-2 in conference and 8-8 overall.   The Cougars return to the road on Wednesday to take on Garden City Community College before returning home for a Saturday contest against Butler Community College.  Game time for Wednesday’s contest is 7:30 p.m. at Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex.
Dodge City jumped out to a four-point advantage which they held for the first five minutes before things unraveled for the Conquistadors.  The inside play of Dominique Wilson, Raphael Stephens, and Raheem Johnson took control and scored the Cougars’ next eight points to reverse the score to a four-point Barton advantage.  Off the bench came Kevin Kuteyi and the microwave from Maryland knocked down back-to-back treys as the Cougars went on a 17-0 run in the next five minutes to lead 29-14 with nine minutes to play.  After two A.J.Downing free throws ended the Dodge drought, Barton outscored the Conqs 19-8 to close out the half for a 48-24 advantage.
As much as the Cougars were hot from the field shooting 61%, the Barton defense was just as effective holding the Conqs to 24% shooting including limiting Dodge to under 17% from behind the arc.  Barton also controlled the boards doubling up the Conqs 25-14 as four Cougars grabbed four or more rebounds.
In the second half the teams traded points for the next ten minutes as Barton only increased its lead by one to lead 64-39 with ten minutes to play.  With the Cougars utilizing its bench play, Baron increased its lead to thirty-six with 3:40 to play behind Trey Unrau’s three-pointer and the inside play of Dominique Wilson.
Barton’s strong defensive play continued throughout the second half as the Cougars finished holding the Conqs to 30% shooting from the field which included only a 14% clip from behind the arc.   The Cougars also held the Jayhawk West’s leading scorer Vic Adams to only eight points on three-of-thirteen shooting, twelve points below his average. Cooling off to under 40% in the second half, the Cougars still shot nearly 50% from the game and 44% from long distance.
Andell Cumberbatch’s nineteen points and eleven rebounds led the Cougars while Turon Parker and Kevin Kuteyi scored thirteen apiece.   Despite not having a player in double-digits, Dodge had three players with nine points.  Delvon Rencher, Keith Crockett, and A.J. Downing each scored nine while the Conqs second leading scorer Aaron Tate finished with five points after leaving the contest at 8:46 in the first half due to an injury.

#9 Cougars open conference play with victory at pre-season favorite Seward County

Dropping from the ranks of the unbeaten earlier in the week, the No. 9 Barton Community College men’s basketball team opened up the 2013 Jayhawk Conference season Saturday night with its biggest win of the year knocking off the conference favorite Seward County Community College Saints 79-66 in Liberal.  Snapping a six-game losing streak to the Saints, Barton improves to 14-1 on the season while dropping Seward to 9-6.  Barton will take to the court for the second time in three days as the Cougars take on Dodge City Community College at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the debut of Barton’s new gym floor “L.T. and Sheila Fleske Court”.

The Cougars never trailed in Saturday’s contest as Barton jumped out to 7-0 lead to start the game.  Freshman Raheem Johnson’s tomahawk one-handed jam off a Cougar missed shot set the tone early for the Cougars.  Turon Parker then knocked down a trey and Johnson followed with another inside bucket as Barton was in control early.
Leading by ten at the midpoint of the first half, Barton went cold from the field and was scoreless for the next five minutes.  Behind a stifling defense, the Cougars held the Saints at arm’s reach during that stretch as Seward was only able to draw within two.  Breaking the drought, Barton pushed the lead out to six before settling into a four point 34-30 lead at intermission.

The second half was much the same as Barton scored the first four points and quickly built an eleven point lead shortly afterward.  The Saints drew as close as five points midway through the half before another Johnson two-handed follow dunk capped a 4-0 Barton run pushing the lead back to nine.   The teams traded buckets for the next six minutes until the Cougars wrapped up the game in the last three minutes scoring their last eight points from the charity stripe.

Turon Parker’s career high twenty-two points led three Cougars in double-digit scoring connecting on four-of-seven from behind the arc and a perfect eight-for-eight from the free throw line.  Algie Key scored twenty-one and dished out five assists while Andell Cumberbatch recorded his second double-double of the season with fifteen points and ten rebounds.  Raheem Johnson just missed recording a double-double as he grabbed a team high twelve rebounds to go along with eight points on four-of-five shooting.

Jabari Peters led four Saints in double-digit scoring with seventeen on four-of-seven from long distance.  Kaheem Johnson scored twelve points with a team high four assists while Jerry Cobb and Malcolm Hill-Bey scored eleven and ten points respectively.

Missed opportunities doom Cougars, suffer overtime defeat

Escaping with a victory the previous night, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team couldn’t take advantage of some late opportunities in Wednesday’s contest and dropped a 78-75 overtime decision to Paris Junior College at the Sonic Shootout in Chanute, Kansas.  With a three-point lead and two opportunities to increase the lead in the last two minutes of regulation, the Cougars couldn’t convert and dropped their first game of the season to fall to 13-1.  Wrapping up the non-conference portion of their schedule, Barton now will prepare for the grind of the conference season as the Cougars will begin a tough four-game seven-day stretch starting this Saturday in Liberal, Kansas.  The Cougars will open with a road trip to face the pre-season conference favorites Seward County Community College before returning home for a Monday contest against Butler Community College.  Game time for the Cougars-Saints contest set to begin at 8:00 p.m. at the Seward Greenhouse.

Barton jumped out to a pair of nine-point leads early in the first half and led 19-10 at the 12:20 mark. The Dragons chipped away at the Cougar lead until a Delvin Dickerson field goal with 7:11 to play gave Paris its first lead since the opening bucket.   Following three ties, Barton managed to grab the lead briefly before Paris built a pair of four-point leads.  The Cougars’ Kevin Kuteyi drained a deep guarded three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 35-36 going into intermission.

The first seven minutes of the second half belonged to Paris’ Antonio Arnold as he buried four of his team high five three-pointers in the first five minutes of the half helping the Dragons build their largest lead of the game at nine points.  With the Cougars trailing 56-47 with 12:15 to play, Barton cut the deficit to one in the next five minutes behind five points from Turon Parker.  After Paris built the lead back out to four, Barton took the lead back with 2:39 remaining behind back-to-back buckets from Dominique Wilson, the second coming from a pin-point assist from Parker.    After an Algie Key basket gave the Cougars a 68-65 lead with 1:52 to play, Barton gave itself two opportunities in the closing minutes to build on the lead but came away scoreless.  Trailing by three Paris’ Mike Harmon was fouled on a three-point attempt and sank all three charities to tie the game with thirty seconds remaining.   The Dragons’ Anthony Adams then blocked Key’s attempt in the waning seconds as the Cougars were unable to get a good shot off and the teams headed to overtime tied at 68.

The teams traded leads in the first three minutes of extra time before Paris grabbed the final lead with 1:11 to play on an Anthony Adams field goal.  Adams, who scored nine of his nineteen points in overtime, gave the Dragons a four point lead with ten seconds left on free throws to ice the game and send Barton to its first defeat of the season.

Algie Key double-double effort led the Cougars as the sophomore All-American scored seventeen points and grabbed ten rebounds.  Turon Parker also contributed seventeen to go along with his team high four assists.  Despite an off shooting night, Dominique Wilson also reached double-digit scoring with twelve points to go along with eight rebounds.  Andell Cumberbatch scored ten points while leading in the team in steals with three.

Averaging only six points per game, sophomore Antonio Arnold had a big night for the Dragons scoring twenty points including five-of-eleven from beyond the arc as the rest of the Paris team were a poultry two-of-thirteen.  Also reaching double-figures for the Dragons were Anthony Adams with nineteen and Chris Jones with eleven to go along with a team high eight assists.

For the second game in a row the Cougars allowed a team to shoot over 50% percent as the Dragons finished at 57% meanwhile Barton shot a solid 48%.

Late second half surge lifts No. 9 Cougars to 84-82 comeback win

After four days of practice and a month off from competition, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team escaped with a 84-82 win over Missouri State University-West Plains Tuesday at the Sonic Shootout in Chanute, Kansas.  Trailing for most of the game, an 11-0 run late in the contest overcame a hot shooting West Plains team that knocked down sixteen three-pointers to hold a thirty-three point scoring differential from long distance.  Barton improves to 13-0 on the season and will play Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against Paris Junior College to wrap up non-conference action.

The Cougars trailed by eight points midway through the first half until a 10-0 run gave Barton its first lead with 3:29 to play.  Neosho outscored the Cougars 11-8 including draining three of its seven first half three-pointers the rest of the half to take a 37-36 lead to the break.

In a game featuring fifteen lead changes and six ties, the Cougars erased a five-point deficit with 5:33 to play by going on a 11-0 run to take a 79-73 lead with 3:12 remaining.  Turon Parker, who scored seventeen of his team leading twenty points in the second half, scored nine points in that stretch to key the run including a game tying three-pointer.  The Cougars increased the lead to six but needed a pair of Andell Cumberbatch free throws late to seal the win as West Plains’ Devaugntah Williams banked in a deep trey at the buzzer for the final 84-82 score.

In addition to Parker’s twenty points, three other Cougars reached double figures in scoring.  Algie Key, who scored twelve first half points finished with nineteen to go along with nine rebounds including six from the offensive glass.  Andell Cumberbatch scored nineteen with seven rebounds and Raphael Stephens had a solid night with ten points and nine rebounds.
