Castagnini earns All-American award

Federico Castagnini recently received honorable mention All-American status in NJCAA Division I Baseball.  The national award adds to Castagnini’s post season accolades as he also received first team All-Region VI and conference honors as a KJCCC All-Jayhawk West selection.  During his sophomore season, Castagnini led the 2012 Cougars in runs batted in and three-of-the-four extra base hit categories.  The shortstop from Verona, Italy, batted .361 on the season getting 75 hits with a .563 slugging percentage.  The Creighton University signee led the Cougars with 6 homeruns, 16 doubles, and drove home 67 runs.  Additionally, Castagnini was 12-of-12 in stolen bases, scored 61 runs, and finished with four triples.

Castagnini and Garland earn All-Region and All-Conference honors

Barton Community College sophomores Federico Castagnini and Clayton Garland were recently named to the All-Region VI and KJCCC All-Jayhawk West baseball teams.  Castagnini earned first team regional and conference honors while Garland earned first team conference and second team regional honors.  The duo led the Cougars in nearly every offensive category as Barton finished 33-26 on the season.

Clayton Garland Playing centerfield and batting in the cleanup position in the lineup, Garland led Barton in six major offensive categories.  The Cheyenne, Wyoming, native led the team in batting .363 on the season with a .581 slugging percentage in pounding out 78 hits including 9 triples.  Crossing the plate in a team leading 61 times and accumulating 125 total bases, Garland finished second on the team behind Castagnini with 57 runs batted in, 14 doubles, and five home runs.

 

Cougars' comeback falls short in sub-regional championships

After dropping its first game of the Region VI Sub-Regional, the Barton Community College baseball team strung together consecutive extra inning victories before falling in the championship game Monday afternoon in Garden City.  Barton, which lost its opener Saturday afternoon 8-1 to Cowley College, immediately had to return to the diamond to battle through the elimination side of the bracket and earned a 7-6 come-from-behind extra inning win over Labette Community College.  On Sunday Barton faced top-seeded and tournament host Garden City Community College where the Cougars ended the Broncbusters season by winning 2-1 in twelve innings.  Facing the same Cowley team that defeated the Cougars handily in the first round, Barton led 1-0 before Cowley tied it in the seventh then tacked on three runs in the ninth to end the Cougars season 4-1.  Cowley, 32-24 on the season, advances to the Region VI Championships held in Wichita May 12-14 while Barton ends its season at 33-26.  MORE

Cougar baseball wraps up regular season with win, prepare for Region VI playoffs

The Barton Community College baseball team ended the 2012 regular season with a win as they defeated Coffeyville Community College Tuesday afternoon 9-6 at Emporia State University’s Glennen Field.  The Cougars, who improve to 31-24 on the season, finished sixth in Region VI play at 10-18.  They will travel to Garden City this weekend to begin Region VI Super Regional play at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday against the Eastern Division’s third place team Cowley College.  The Tigers finished their regular season dropping 3-of-4 to Coffeyville earlier in the week and will enter the contest with a 28-24 overall record including a 25-11 mark in region play.  The winner of the Barton-Cowley matchup will play at 1:00 p.m. Sunday against the winner of host Garden City Community College and Labette Community College.  The two matchup losers will play in an elimination game Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. for the right to advance in the double-elimination tournament.  Winners of each of the four Region VI Super Regionals will advance to Wichita for the May 12-14 Region VI Championship.

Highlights
Barton pounded out seventeen hits on the afternoon and received a solid outing from starting pitcher Brett Tunnell.  Striking out the first three batters he faced, Tunnell didn’t allow a hit and struck out five overall in his three innings of work.   Alex King and Tanner Carpenter set the stage for the Cougar scoring as the duo combined for six hits from their first and second slots in the lineup.  Carpenter’s two-out double in the third inning sparked the Cougars first two runs of the game while King’s two-out two-run homerun helped cap a three run fourth inning. On the day six batters had two or more hits, including six for extra bases.

Garden City ends Cougars home schedule with twin bill sweep

Wrapping up its 2012 home schedule at Lawson-Biggs Field, the Barton Community College baseball team dropped both games of today’s doubleheader 7-1 and 4-3 to Garden City Community College.  The Cougars fall to 30-24 on the season, finish seventh in the conference with a 12-20 record, and tied for sixth in the region at 10-18.  With today’s sweep and winning 3-of-4 over the weekend, Garden City will share at least a tie for the conference title and a second place in the region in finishing at 23-9 and 19-9 respectively and 36-19 overall.  Barton’s next game will be Tuesday in Emporia against Coffeyville Community College.  First pitch for the 9-inning game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Emporia State University’s Glennen Field.

Highlights – Game One
Garden City’s Matt Geislinger kept the Cougar batters off balance in game one throwing a two-hit 7-1 victory.  The Busters’ damage came in the second inning as they plated four then later added two in the fourth and one in the fifth.  The lone Barton run came in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single back Zac Villalpando.

Highlights – Game Two
Garden City jumped out ahead by scoring single runs in the first and second. The Cougars tied the score in the second behind the leadoff double by Dylan Turpin followed by consecutive singles from Andre Vierya, Villalpando, and Tanner Carpenter.  Michael Edlefsen pushed across the second run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

The teams remained tied at two until the Busters struck for two runs on three hits including two doubles.  Adam Smith led off the home half with a double then later scored on a Ryan Tracy groundout and throwing error by the Garden City first baseman.  Barton then got consecutive singles by Alex King and Andre Vieyra to give the Cougars a first and second base one-out situation.  The Cougars rally was short lived as Alex King was doubled up at second off a line drive from Villalpando to end the game.

Cougars bounce back from tough loss, spoil Garden City’s hope of top seed

After surrounding the lead in the final inning of game one to lose 6-3, the Barton Community College baseball team bounced back and held on for a 5-4 victory over Garden City Community College in game two of today’s doubleheader at Lawson-Biggs Field.  The Cougars, 30-22 on the season and 12-18 in the Jayhawk Conference, dropped Garden City into a three-way tie for the conference title as they dropped to 21-9 in conference play and 34-19 overall.  In Region VI play the Cougars move to 10-16 while Garden City sees their hopes of the top region seed dashed as they move to 17-9, three games behind Seward County Community College.  The two teams will return to the diamond Sunday for another doubleheader at Lawson-Biggs Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. 

Highlights – Game One
Garden City led 2-1 until the Cougars struck for two in the bottom of the fifth.  Andre Vieyra led off with a double followed by a Tanner Carpenter base on balls.  After an Alex King sacrifice, Michael Edlefsen grounded out to second scoring Vieyra.  The go-ahead run came on Federico Castagnini triple over the Garden City centerfielder as he smashed a 1-2 pitch into a stiff north wind to give the Cougars the 3-2 lead they would hold until the seventh.

As been the case in many games this season, the Cougars pitching staff couldn’t hold the lead as three pitchers combined in giving up four runs, two hits, three hit batsman, and two walks in the fateful final seventh inning.  The Broncbusters’ two hits came off a Kevin Czanecki triple down the right field line to lead off the inning then was driven home by Dakota Kell’s line drive up the middle two batters later. 

Highlights – Game Two
The Cougars bounced back from the game one defeat to post a two-out rally in scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.  Castagnini’s single got the Cougars going followed by a Clayton Garland reach on Garden City error.  Adam Smith then made the Busters pay as he drove 1-2 pitch into the left center gap scoring two runs before getting thrown out stretching his double into a triple.

The Busters would score one in the fifth but Barton responded with three in the home half highlighted by a back-to-back balk calls on Garden City’s Kris Lalk and a Garland triple. 

Brett Bond kept the Busters at bay pitching 7 1/3 innings before giving way to the Barton bullpen.  Bond allowed only four hits and three unearned runs as the Busters were making things interesting with a single run in the seventh and two in the eight before the Cougars turned to the bullpen combination of Niccolo Loardi and Edlefsen who closed out the Buster threats.

Cougars break from conference schedule, rout Kansas Wesleyan JV

Taking a break from the grind of the Jayhawk Conference schedule, the Barton Community College baseball team had an enjoyable evening at the ballpark in a 17-4 win over the Kansas Wesleyan Junior Varsity tonight at Lawson-Biggs Field.  The Cougars, 28-21 on the season and 11-17 in the Jayhawk Conference, scored in every inning in cruising to the run-rule victory.   Great Bend native Nick Ney got the start and picked up his first victory for Barton allowing 5 hits and two runs in three innings of work as the Cougar pitching staff combined to surrender only seven hits and two walks.  Offensively Barton pounded out eleven hits as twelve of the thirteen hitters reached base.  The Cougars will travel to Hesston College Wednesday for another non-conference game before returning home this weekend for a regular season concluding series with Garden City Community College.  First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is 1:00 p.m. with “Pack the Park” tailgate festivities beginning at noon.

Cougar Baseball splits day one of weekend series with Dodge City

The Barton Community College baseball team needed extra innings in game one then were shutout in game two as they split the first day of the weekend series with Dodge City Community College in Dodge City.   After scoring four runs in the top of the first in game one, the Cougars surrendered four runs in the fifth and sixth to send the game to extra innings.  Barton was able to score three in the top of the eighth then shut down the Conquistadors in the home half to win 8-5.  Game two was dominated by pitching and timely defensive plays as Dodge City scored one in the third and two in the fifth to win 3-0.  With the day’s split, the Cougars are 26-20 on the season and 10-16 in conference play while Dodge City moves to 16-26 overall and 10-20 in conference.

Cougars blow open game with big seventh inning to beat Brown Mackie 13-1

The Barton Community College baseball team scored early then plated seven more runs in the seventh inning to beat Brown Mackie College 13-1 Tuesday evening at Rathert Stadium in Junction City.   Playing a neutral site contest to provide a free family and military appreciation night at the ballpark, the Cougars improved their record to 25-19 on the season while Brown Mackie slips to 5-22.  Barton is in the midst of a ten game road trip stretch as they will travel to Dodge City this weekend to take on the Conquistadors in a four game series.  First pitch for Saturday and Sunday’s doubleheader is set for 1:05 p.m. at Cavalier Field.

Highlights
Barton capitalize on two Brown Mackie errors and a hit batsman in the first two innings to build a four run advantage.  Brown Mackie managed a single run in the top of the third on a couple of singles and a hit batsman but it would be the only run the Lions would get as the Cougars’ Jason Harris and Niccolo Loardi combined for a six-hit ten strikeout performance.   Barton broke open the game in the seventh inning as the Cougars blasted two home runs and sent thirteen batters to the plate in scoring seven runs.  One inning later Barton added two more runs to cruise in the late innings for the 13-1 victory.

On the mound Harris pitched five solid innings in picking up his first win in ten appearances.  Harris struck out four while walking four but only gave up four hits and one earned run.  Loardi pitched the final four innings and was equally impressive in striking out six, walking three, and giving up only two hits.

In three plate appearances Andre Vierya led the Cougars with five runs batted in with four coming on his seventh inning grand slam.  Federico Castagnini, last week’s conference player of the week for the second time this season, hit his sixth homerun of the season as his two-run blast to centerfield ignited the seventh inning scoring.  Alex King and Clayton Garland also drove in two runs as six players contributed to the thirteen runs driven home.

Game Notes:
Barton history instructor and retired Army Sergeant Major Mike Cox threw out the ceremonial first pitch in the game while Junction City High School students Paige Jones and Bryanna Spenser sung the national anthem.  The evening’s free family night at the ballpark included over a hundred donated items from Junction City and Fort Riley merchants used as give-aways in between inning promotions to those in attendance while the Cougars wore special camouflage uniforms in recognizing and honoring military personnel and families. 

Barton Baseball picks up conference series win against Butler

Since splitting the conference opening season series at Hutchinson, the Barton Community College baseball team has lost each conference series three games to one.  This past weekend the Cougars picked up their first series win by capturing three of the four games against Butler Community College at Barton’s Lawson-Biggs Field.  On Friday the Cougars needed a bottom of the seventh game-tying home run by Federico Castagnini to go on to win game one 8-7 in eight innings.  Butler was able to split Friday’s doubleheader by scoring five runs in the last three innings to win 9-8.   In Saturday’s game one sophomore Ashton Sivigliano pitched a two-hitter as the Cougars run-ruled Butler 11-1.  Barton wrapped up the series by scoring four runs in the third and three in the fifth to cruise to the 8-2 victory.   With the three victories, Barton improves to 9-15 in conference and 23-16 on the season while Butler drops to 10-10 in conference play and 19-19 overall.  The Cougars will have the week off until facing Metropolitan Community College-Longview in a four game series next week-end in Kansas City, KS.  Barton will play its next ten games on the road before returning home April 28 against Garden City. 

Highlights
Trailing by one in the top of the seventh of Friday’s game one, Butler’s Tory Bell hit a two-run home run giving the Grizzlies a 7-6 lead.  Castagnini, who was facing a full-count and after lining two shots off the wall in foul territory, sent the game to extra innings on his solo home run to left field.  Devin Welch, who relieved Jason Harris in the top of the eighth, pitched out of his first and third jam by inducing a double play to end the Grizzly threat.  After an Eric Carlson groundout to start Barton’s eighth, Alex King singled and Michael Edlefsen walked to set up Castagnini delivering the game-winning RBI to left field giving the Cougars the 8-7 win.

Despite an 8-4 advantage through the fourth inning, the Cougar pitching staff couldn’t hold the lead and gave up five runs in the last three innings to fall 9-8.  The Grizzlies were able to tie the game in the sixth by pushing across two runs after being down to its final out.  After back-to-back walks and a hit batsman, Butler’s Brayon Colley delivered his third hit of the day driving the tying runs home on his left field single.  In the top of the seventh the Cougars again gave Butler the breaks it needed in back-to-back walks to lead off the inning.  Baylor Parker, who reached base on the first walk, sprinted home from third on a pass ball to give the Grizzlies the game winning run.  The Barton offense posed no threat in the last three innings as the Cougars went down in order in the 9-8 Butler victory.

The Barton bats came to life on Saturday and wasted little time in scoring as the Cougars put up eight runs in the bottom of the first.  It would be all the runs they would need as Ashton Sivigliano pitched a masterful complete game two-hitter and struck five as the Cougars tacked on another three runs in the sixth to end the game 11-1 in run rule fashion.

Barton would break open a one-all tie in the bottom of the third in part to three of Butler’s seven errors in the game.  After the Grizzlies scored one in the top of the fifth, the Cougars struck back for three runs behind RBI singles from Ryan Tracy and Dylan Turpin, as well as, a Logan Buehler sacrifice.  The teams went scoreless the last three and half innings and Barton captured the series with the 8-2 win. 

Garland’s 3-run home run lifts Barton Baseball to 18-16 victory in weekend series finale at Cloud County

Clayton Garland’s three-run home run in the top of the ninth gave the Barton Community College baseball team a much needed 18-16 victory in the weekend series finale Sunday against Cloud County Community College.  The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take Saturday’s game one 4-3 then followed with an 18-2 blasting of the Cougars in game two.  On Sunday Cloud again came from behind scoring one run in each of the last three innings to escape with a 3-2 victory.  Trailing 3-0 in the weekend series and squandering a ten run lead in Sunday’s game two, Barton suddenly found themselves trailing 15-14 headed to the ninth.  After back-to-back singles by Alex King and Adam Smith and a Federico Castagnini groundout, Garland cleared the table with his home run.  The Cougars added an insurance run on a Ryan Tracy fielder’s choice scoring Dylan Turpin who had doubled to right field after Garland’s homer.  Barton, 20-15 on the season, will take a break from conference play on Tuesday as they travel to Hays to play a 4:00 p.m. nine-inning game against the Fort Hays State University junior varsity.  The Cougars, who are now 6-14 in conference play, will return to Jayhawk West action this Friday and Saturday as Butler Community College comes to Lawson-Biggs Field.  Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Saturday’s doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Baseball caps weekend series at Seward with big win

The Barton Community College team finished its weekend series against Seward County Community College on a positive note by winning 18-8 in game two of Sunday’s doubleheader in Liberal.  The Saints won both Saturday games by the scores of 9-2 and 15-3 and captured game one 7-3 on Sunday.   In going 1-3 over the weekend, the Cougars slipped further down the conference standings to 4-8 and 17-9 overall while Seward improves to 8-4 in the Jayhawk and 15-14 overall.  Barton will take a break from conference action and travel to region foe Brown Mackie for a nine-inning game at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in Salina, Kansas.  MORE

Cougars cruise to 16-7 win in non-conference play

The Barton Community College team took a break from conference action and defeated the Bethany College Junior Varsity 16-7 Wednesday evening at Lawson-Biggs Field.  The Cougars, who had defeated Bethany previously 21-11 on February 22, scored in bunches to capture the win.  After trailing 1-0 after the first, Barton scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth behind triples by Clayton Garland and Ryan Tracy followed by a three-run homerun by Tanner Carpenter.  After Bethany scored one in the fifth and five in the sixth, the Cougars struck back with five more runs in the home half of the sixth then later added four in the eight in cruising to the victory.  Barton improves to 16-6 on the season and will next play Seward County Community College this weekend.   The two teams will play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. each day.

No. 16 Cougars bounce back on Saturday to set up series finale

After dropping the first two games of the four-game series, the No. 16 ranked Barton Community College baseball team redeemed itself by winning game three against Pratt Community College to set up Sunday’s finale.   Pratt put on a hitting display on Friday in cruising to an 18-6 win then scored five runs in the top of the seventh of Saturday’s game one for a surprise 9-8 win.  In game two of Saturday’s doubleheader the Cougars exploded for eleven runs in the fourth and shut out the red hot Beavers 15-0.   Barton, 15-5 on the season and 3-4 in conference play, will tangle again with Pratt, 10-5 on the season and 5-2 in conference play, on Sunday in a nine-inning game starting at 1:00 p.m. at Lawson-Biggs Field.  MORE

Cougars battle back for 9-8 extra inning win over Hutchinson

The No. 16 ranked Barton Community College baseball team fought from behind to win 9-8 in ten innings over Hutchinson Community College Friday in Hutchinson.   The Cougars scored seven unanswered and received solid relief pitching to capture game one of the Jayhawk Conference season opener for both teams.  With the win Barton improves to 13-1 on the season while Hutchinson drops to 4-4.  The two teams will be back on the diamond Saturday for a pair of seven innings games beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Hutchinson’s Bud Detter Field.  The four-game series will wrap up with a nine inning game at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  MORE

Cougars enter national poll at #16

Fresh off a weekend five game sweep, the Barton Community College baseball team is ranked No. 16 in the first regular season NJCAA Division I national poll recently released.  Barton’s 12-1 start is also the best start since the 2006 season when the Cougars started 7-1.  Barton will get its stiffest test of the early season as they travel to Hutchinson for a four game series with Hutchinson Community College.  First pitch for Friday’s nine inning game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Hutchinson’s Bud Detter Field.  The two teams will return to the diamond at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday for a seven inning doubleheader and then wrap up the series with a nine inning game at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  MORE

Castagnini named Jayhawk Conference baseball player of the week

Barton Community College baseball player Federico Castagnini has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week.  Castagnini, a sophomore from Verona, Italy, batted .526 for the week, had a .667 on base percentage, scored 11 runs, and drove in another 11 runs in helping to lead Barton to a perfect 6-0 week including a five-game series weekend sweep of Western Nebraska Community College. Batting near .500 for the year, Castagnini has been an integral part of Barton’s 12-1 record to start the season.  MORE

Cougar baseball sweep five-game series, off to 12-1 start on season

With a five-game sweep this past weekend, the Barton Community College baseball team is off to a 12-1 start, its best start since the 2005-06 season when it started 7-1.  The Cougars, who started the season 3-1 after a trip to Texas, have won ten straight including this past weekend’s sweep of Western Nebraska Community College.  Barton won 5-4 and 7-2 on Friday, 14-9 and 11-4 on Saturday, then completed the series sweep with a nine inning 7-2 victory on Sunday.  The Cougars will have the week off before starting a four game series with Hutchinson Community College at Hutchinson on Friday.  First pitch for Friday’s nine inning game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Hutchinson’s Bud Detter Field.  The two teams will return to the diamond at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday for a seven inning doubleheader and then wrap up the series with a nine inning game at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  MORE

Geisick signs with Newman University

Sophomore Adam Geisick signed a NCAA Division II national letter of intent to play baseball next fall for Newman University in Wichita, KS.  Geisick signed Wednesday in a celebration ceremony held at the Kirkman Activity Center on the Barton campus.

Castagnini and Harris sign Division I letters of intent

Two Barton Community College baseball players signed NCAA Division I letters of intent Thursday at the Kirkman Activity Center on the Barton campus.  Sophomores Federico Castagnini and Jason Harris committed to four-year schools on the second day of the early signing period.  Both players will move on to nationally acclaimed schools as Castagnini signed with Creighton University and Harris signed with the University of North Carolina Charlotte.  MORE

Edlefsen completes his first year in Major League Baseball

Prior to playing professionally, Edlefsen attended Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minnesota and then Barton County Community College and University of Nebraska. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 41st round of the 2004 amateur draft, however he did not sign. He was then drafted by the Giants in the 16th round of the 2007 amateur draft, beginning his professional career that season.

Edlefsen pitched for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 2007, going 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA in 18 appearances. In 2008, he pitched for the San Jose Giants, going 8-5 with a 3.36 ERA in 40 games. He split 2009 between the San Jose Giants, Connecticut Defenders and Fresno Grizzlies and went 8-1 with nine saves and a 1.95 ERA, striking out 72 batters in 69 1/3 innings. In 2010, he pitched for the Grizzlies and went 7-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 49 games.  Edlefsen was recalled by the Giants to replace Brian Wilson, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation.
