Duncan is one of seven Barton Student-Athletes receiving national academic honors
Kathleen Duncan is one of seven sophomore student-athletes to receive national academic honors the Barton Athletic Department announced for the 2011-12 season.
From Lakin, Kansas, Duncan's 3.64 grade point average earned her the national Exemplary Academic Achievement honor.
Leading the list of honorees is women's basketball player Devan Boeger whose 4.0 grade point average earned her the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence. The Great Bend native also earned Co-Outstanding Graduate honors at Barton’s graduation ceremony in May. The Cougars also placed two on the second tier of academic honors as men’s track team member Tyler Rathke and women’s tennis player Karisa Kaiser each earned the NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement honors. Rathke, from Hays, Kansas, finished with a 3.87 grade point average while Kaiser, from Hoisington, Kansas, and Co-Student Ambassador of the Year finished with a 3.85. Earning NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement honors were softball players Kristin Schartz (3.76) from Larned, Kansas, Tessa Sterling (3.70) of McPherson, Kansas, and Co-Outstanding Graduate Anna Voss (3.6) from Hays, Kansas.
Local talent headlines Barton women’s golf team at national championship
The Barton Community College women’s golf team begins play today at the NJCAA women’s Golf National Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Lady Cougars will play eighteen holes each day as the tournament concludes on Thursday May 17. Barton, as the result of having four players qualify with their top ten individual finish in the recent Region VI Championships, qualify as a team as well. Leading the Barton team will be Russell native Chelsea Dietz as she finished fifth at the Region VI Championships. Fredonia’s Lindsey Wait finished 7th, Alyssa Dickman of Wichita finished 8th, and Hoisington’s Britany Axman placed 9th.

Barton women 17th at NJCAA National Tournament
The Barton Community College women’s golf team finished 17th at the 2011 NJCAA National Golf Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. this past week. After rounds about 420 the opening two days, Barton got comfortable with the LPGA International Golf Course and shot 410 and 404 the final two days to move into 17th. It is the school’s highest finish since a 10th place effort in 2006. Host Daytona State won the event with Redlands College (Okla) taking 2nd. MORE
Cougar men finish 7th at District III meet to complete season
The Barton Community College men’s golf team ended its season with a 7th place finish at the NJCAA District III Championships in Lawrence Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars needed to finish in the top 5 at Alvamar Country Club in order to advance to the NJCAA Championships later this month. Indian Hills (Iowa) won the meet with a great 3rd round to finish with a 921. Iowa Western was 2nd with 933 and Hutchinson 3rd at 935. Barton finished with a 996. Timothy Spare fired a 243 for top Barton honors, placing in 23rd place. MORE
Barton women capture Region VI title; Four headed to Nationals
The Barton Community College women’s golf team won the Region VI Championship played Monday and Tuesday at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson. Barton built an 8 stroke lead the opening day then held on to win by those same 8 strokes to bring home the Region VI Championship plaque. The Cougars shot a 392-394—786 to beat runner-up Dodge City, which shot a 400-394—794. In addition four Cougars placed in the Top 10 and earned the right to move on the NJCAA National Championship May 16-19 in Orlando, Florida. With four qualifying for the National Championship Barton will get to compete as a team in the event. MORE
