Barton men 2nd in Region VI; Walker wins 4 gold medals

The Barton Community College men’s track and field team placed 2nd over the weekend at the Region VI Championships in Coffeyville. Barton’s Everett Walker again proved himself the top sprinter in the region with his wins in the 100m and 200m to go with a pair of relay gold medals as Barton won 7 events during the competition. Barton had won the last 2 Region VI titles and 11 of the past 13. The Cougar women finished 7th overall and brought home 3 gold medals. Barton will be back on the track in two weeks as the Cougars head to Hutchinson for the NJCAA Championships May 19-21. MORE

Barton hosts initial track meet on new surface

The Barton Community College track and field men’s team didn’t have to travel for a track meet for the 1st time in 12 years as the Cougars played host to the Barton Invitational Saturday on the new surface installed over the past year. Barton competed with five other teams in the area with fellow Jayhawk schools Cloud County, Pratt, Garden City, and Colby as well as Fort Hays State University. The Cougars did their fare share of winning, capturing 8 events on the men’s side 4 more on the women’s side. Included was a school record throw of 191-0 in the hammer from Marcela Solano. Barton will head to Coffeyville this weekend for the Region VI meet. The NJCAA National Championships are slated for May 19-21 at Hutchinson. MORE

Men’s 4x100 relay sets meet record in Oklahoma; Ross doubles in jumps

The Barton Community College track and field men’s team won 3 events and set a meet record at John Jacobs Invitational Saturday at the University Oklahoma in Norman. Barton’s 4x100m relay team set the meet record while Carmetrick Ross won both the long jump and triple jump for Barton at the meet. In addition, Barton took 2nd in 5 events. The women’s team placed in 6 events during the competition, highlighted by a runner-up effort from Marcelo Solano in the hammer throw. Barton will be in Arkansas this weekend for the John McDonnell Invitational then at home April 30 to host the Barton Invitational. MORE

Barton sprinters, hurdlers impressive at Texas Relays

The Barton Community College track and field men’s team fared extremely well at the prestigious Texas Relays in Austin over the weekend. The Cougars ran the 3rd fastest time of any college in the 4x100m relay at the event and swept the college division of the 100m going 1-2-3-4. Barton also won the College division of the 110m hurdles and took 3rd in the 400m hurdles. For the women, Marcelo Solano broke her own Barton school record she been assaulting this year in the hammer throw. Several members of the Barton team also competed at Emporia State over the weekend at the Emporia State Relays. MORE

Barton opens outdoor track season at Cowley

The Barton Community College track and field team opened the 2011 outdoor season at Arkansas City this past weekend at the Cowley Tiger Invitational. The men won 10 events during the meet while the women captured five. For the men Carmetrick Ross and Frank Afriyie were both double winners in the field. The Cougar men also won five events on the track including an impressive 1-2-3 finish in the 100m. Sametra Kelly was a double winner in the field for the women. Barton will split the squad this weekend, heading to the Texas Relays and the Emporia State Relays. MORE

Barton men 3rd at NJCAA Championships; Walker wins sprint double

The Barton Community College men’s track and field team was a solid 3rd place this past weekend the NJCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas. The Cougars scored 84 points in the meet for 3rd. That was well behind Iowa Central’s winning total of 157 and South Plains’ (Texas) 136. But it was also well ahead of Iowa Western’s 48 which finished 4th. The Cougars won 3 events in the process, including Everett Walker winning the sprint double with his wins in the 55m and 200m. Matt Marcoccia won the shot put for the Cougars. MORE

Barton women 9th at NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

The Barton Community College women’s track and field team took 9th at the NJCAA National Indoor Championships this past weekend in Lubbock, Texas. The Cougars did crown a pair of national champions, winning both throwing events. Barton Janee Mickens won the shot put then took 2nd to teammate Marcela Solano in the weight throw as those events totaled 28 of the Cougars 36 points. South Plains won the NJCAA Indoor title with 180.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Central Arizona. The Cougars were the highest placing team from the Jayhawk Conference in the meet. Butler, Cowley, and Cloud County were all right behind at 10th, 11th, and 13th.  MORE

Barton men win Region VI Indoor title

The Barton Community College men’s track and field team captured the 2011 Region VI Indoor championship again, earning the title by 24 points over 2nd place Butler this past weekend at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan. The Cougars won the event with 143 points with Butler 2nd at 119 and Cowley 3rd at 118. No other team scored more than 77.5 points during the meet. The Cougars will look to defend their 2010 NJCAA Indoor Title in a couple of weeks when they travel to Lubbock, Texas March 4-5 for the 2011 version of the meet. MORE

Barton women place 7th a Region VI meet

The Barton Community College men’s track and field team placed 7th at the Region VI Championship this past weekend at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan. The Cougars limited numbers totaled 65 during the event. Cowley College won the meet with 33 points followed closely by Butler with 131. MORE
