Tyler Rathke is one of seven sophomore student-athletes to receive national academic honors the Barton Athletic Department announced for the 2011-12 season. Leading the list of honorees is women's basketball player Devan Boeger whose 4.0 grade point average earned her the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence. The Great Bend native also earned Co-Outstanding Graduate honors at Barton’s graduation ceremony in May. The Cougars also placed two on the second tier of academic honors as men’s track team member Tyler Rathke and women’s tennis player Karisa Kaiser each earned the NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement honors. Rathke, from Hays, Kansas, finished with a 3.87 grade point average while Kaiser, from Hoisington, Kansas, and Co-Student Ambassador of the Year finished with a 3.85. Earning NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement honors were softball players Kristin Schartz (3.76) from Larned, Kansas, Tessa Sterling (3.70) of McPherson, Kansas, and Co-Outstanding Graduate Anna Voss (3.6) from Hays, Kansas. Women’s golf player Kathleen Duncan from Lakin, Kansas rounds out the academic honors as her 3.64 grade point average earned Exemplary Academic Achievement honors as well.
The Barton Community College track and field teams wrapped up its 2011-12 season this week at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championship held in Levelland, Texas. Barton captured three national championships and finished second in four other events in finishing fourth on the men’s side and sixth on the women’s side. Highlighting Barton’s national championships was the men’s 4X100m relay team men with an upset victory, Marcela Solano winning the women’s hammer throw, and freshman Demetrius Lindo capturing the 110m Hurdles. In addition to the three gold medals, the Cougars captured four second place finishes, two third places, and one fourth. After finishing second at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships the Cougar men finished fourth overall in the outdoor. The Lady Cougars finished sixth in the outdoor to follow up on their third place indoor finish. Host school South Plains College continued its recent dominance in the outdoor championships as it won both the men and women titles for fourth consecutive year. The Texans have won the title for the past six years while their female counterparts have a string of four straight. MORE
The Barton Community College track and field teams will wrap up its 2011-12 season this week as they travel to Levelland, Texas, to participate in the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championship to be held May 15-17. The Cougars will send eleven men and seven women to compete in twenty three events. Highlighting the men is freshman Demetrius Lindo who has the nations’ top time in the 110m Hurdles at 13.72. Sophomore Marcela Solano highlights the women’s team with the top distance in the Hammer Throw at 186’1”. Earlier in the spring the Cougar men finished second while the women finished third in the NJCAA Indoor National Championships. MORE

Barton Community College hosts the inaugural KJCCC versus ICCAC Challenge collegiate track and field meet Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7, at the Track/Soccer Complex on the campus of Barton Community College. The Challenge Meet features colleges from the two of the best junior college conferences in the nation, the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) and the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). The challenge meet will pit the KJCCC colleges against the ICCAC college, with each college scoring points for their respective college’s conference. Representing the KJCCC will be host Barton Community College, Cloud County Community College, and Cowley College. Representing the ICCAC will be Iowa Central Community College and Iowa Western Community College. The meet kicks off at 4:00 p.m. on Friday with the hammer throw and 5000 meter run then resumes at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with a full day of events. MORE including results

The Barton Community College men’s and women’s track and field teams finished second and third respectively in the 2012 NJCAA Indoor Championship this past weekend at in Charleston, Illinois. The Barton men, who have won ten indoor championships and finished second three times in the past fifteen years, captured two first place finishes and scored in twelve total events. The Lady Cougars, who have won seventeen national championships and ten second place finishes in its storied history, captured two gold medals and scored in eight events. The Cougars will spend the next couple of weeks preparing for the outdoor portion of its schedule which starts March 28 at the prestigious Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. MORE

The Barton Community College men’s and women’s track and field teams both finished second in the 2012 Region VI Indoor Championship this past weekend at Ahern Field House in Manhattan. The Cougar men came up three points short of Johnson County Community College as the team champion was determined in the final event of the day, the 4X400 relay. Barton trailed by one and needed the win but Johnson beat out the Cougars by .53 to capture the championship. The Lady Cougars held an eight point lead on Coffeyville Community College headed to the 4X400 but due to injury Barton’s second seeded relay team was unable to compete. Coffeyville finished second in the event which closed the gap to earn a tie with Barton for second place. The Cougars will spend the next two weeks training and healing injuries in preparation for the 2012 NJCAA Indoor Championship March 2-3 in Lubbock, Texas. MORE
The Barton Community College track and field team opened the 2012 indoor season at the Holiday Inn Invitational this past weekend at the University of Nebraska. The men met seven national qualifying standard performances for the national indoor meet and won two events over the weekend while the women qualified six and won one event. On the men’s side Akeem Haynes and Aliaksandr Linnik captured first place while Kandace Thomas captured Barton’s lone first place for the women. Barton will travel to Lubbock, Texas, this week-end to participate in the Texas Tech Invitational. MORE
