Reyes captures national championship, Thomas sets record as Cougars wrap up season

Barton’s Tayron Reyes receiving his awards on the medal stand for his 800m national title Saturday at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Barton Community College track and field teams wrapped up its 2012-13 season today at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championship held in Hutchinson, Kansas.  The Barton men, who have won seven outdoor championships and finished in the top five in their previous eighteen national championship meets, battled injuries to score twenty-one points to finish fifteenth. The Lady Cougars, who have won sixteen national championships and four second place finishes in its storied history, had its best hope withdrawal due to injury and finished without points.

Men
Tayron Reyes shined for the Cougars in both the prelims and finals winning the 800m in 1:52.59.  Also running on Barton’s 4X100m relay team replacing injured David Winters, Reyes and the Cougar team of Christian Black, Brien Berry, and Rahim Conwell placed seventh in 42.50.  The Cougars had qualified for the finals placing sixth in Friday’s prelims running a 40.54.

In the sprints the Cougars’ Berry placed fifth in the 100m in 10.20 then improved to fourth in the 200m with a time of 20.80.  Winters, who qualified for the 100m finals running a 10.27, ran injured in the 200m prelims which caused his withdrawal from the event and for the final round of the 100m.   Conwell’s 10.87 in 100m prelims did not qualify for the finals and was later disqualified for a false start in the 200m.

The 800m relay team of David Berry, Jamal Henson, Tyler Lumpkin, and Reyes ran well below their season best to finish in thirteenth place at 8:18.65.

In the field, the Cougars lone entry David Simmons surpassed his personal best throws but was ruled out of bounds and failed to qualify for the finals.

Women
The Lady Cougars only had two entries in the championship led by sophomore Kandace Thomas.  Thomas blew away the field in the 100m prelims in 11.12 seconds, .22 faster than her nearest competitor.  Thomas also set the new Gowans Stadium record in the process and posted the second fastest time in Barton history only to Veronica Campbell’s 11.00 mark set in 2003.  Thomas then posted a Barton top ten mark of 24.27 in the 200m to qualify for the finals but unfortunately for Thomas and the Lady Cougars, Thomas was unable to compete in Saturday’s finals due to injury.

Another bright spot on Friday for the Lady Cougars was the performance of Larned’s Kaileigh Dietrich.  Despite not qualify for the 1500m finals, Dietrich surpassed her personal best in the prelims by over seven seconds in running 5:23.07 to finish twentieth.

Cougars capture three titles at Region VI Championships

The Barton Community College men’s track and field team captured three region championships this past weekend at the 2013 NJCAA Region VI Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Barton’s Track/Soccer Complex.   With fifteen community colleges and over 500 men’s and women’s athletes, the Cougar men’s team finished third in the region and second in the Jayhawk West standings while the Lady Cougars finished fourteenth in region and seventh in the conference.   National qualifiers for Barton will spend the upcoming weeks preparing for the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships set to run May 16-18, 2013, at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Brien Berry led the Cougars with a first place finish in the 200m clocking in at 20.73 to narrowly defeat teammate David Winters’ 20.96.  Rahim Conwell became the third Cougar to place in the event finishing sixth in 22.10.  In the 100m Berry again edged out Winters as his 10.19 captured third place just .07 seconds ahead of Winters’ 10.26.

Tayron Reyes won Barton’s second individual title winning the 800m in 1:57.29 while teammate David Berry finished in fifth at 1:58.89.

In the relays, the Berry-Winters duo teamed up with Conwell and Christian Black to win Barton’s third regional tile running a 44.43 to win the 4X100m relay championship.  Berry, Winters, Jamaal Henson, and Reyes joined forces to finish third in the 4X400m relay with a time of 3:22.00.

Keirston Lightbourne led the Barton hurdlers with a second place 14.72 in the 110m Hurdles while Rharsard Wright finished sixth in a time of 15.24.  Lightbourne was also solid in the 400m Hurdles placing third with a time of 55.64.

In the jump events Lightbourne again led the Cougars with a second place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.11m.   Tony Green also scored points for Barton with a 13.75m leap in the triple jump to finish in fifth place.   Brandon Stone’s 1.93m height in the high jump tied for fifth but fell to sixth on the tiebreaker.

David Simmons was the lone Cougar to score points in the throws placing sixth in the hammer throw with a 45.18.

With All-American Kandace Thomas on the sideline resting for nationals and the Ellinwood distance duo of Michelle Klepper and Montoya not competing, the women’s scoring opportunities were slim.  In Friday’s 1500m run, Larned’s Kaileigh Dietrich came through for the Cougars getting a sixth place finish clocking in at 5:30.24 to earn the Lady Cougars’ lone three points.
