Barton Student-Athletes receive national academic honors

The Barton Community College Athletic Department announces seven sophomore student-athletes received national academic honors for the 2011-12 season.  Leading the list of honorees is women’s basketball player Devan Boeger whose 4.0 grade point average earned her the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence.   The Great Bend native also earned Co-Outstanding Graduate honors at Barton’s graduation ceremony in May.   The Cougars also placed two on the second tier of academic honors as men’s track team member Tyler Rathke and women’s tennis player Karisa Kaiser each earned the NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement honors.  Rathke, from Hays, Kansas, finished with a 3.87 grade point average while Kaiser, from Hoisington, Kansas, and Co-Student Ambassador of the Year finished with a 3.85.   Earning NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement honors were softball players Kristin Schartz (3.76) from Larned, Kansas, Tessa Sterling (3.70) of McPherson, Kansas, and Co-Outstanding Graduate Anna Voss (3.6) from Hays, Kansas.   Women’s golf player Kathleen Duncan from Lakin, Kansas rounds out the academic honors as her 3.64 grade point average earned Exemplary Academic Achievement honors as well. 

Baseball’s Castagnini earns All-American award

Federico CastagniniBaseball’s Federico Castagnini recently received honorable mention All-American status in NJCAA Division I Baseball.  The national award adds to Castagnini’s post season accolades as he also received first team All-Region VI and conference honors as a KJCCC All-Jayhawk West selection.  During his sophomore season, Castagnini led the 2012 Cougars in runs batted in and three-of-the-four extra base hit categories.  The shortstop from Verona, Italy, batted .361 on the season getting 75 hits with a .563 slugging percentage.  The Creighton University signee led the Cougars with 6 homeruns, 16 doubles, and drove home 67 runs.  Additionally, Castagnini was 12-of-12 in stolen bases, scored 61 runs, and finished with four triples.

Track and Field captures three national championships, teams finish fourth and sixth

The Barton Community College track and field teams wrapped up its 2011-12 season this week at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championship held in Levelland, Texas.  Barton captured three national championships and finished second in four other events in finishing fourth on the men’s side and sixth on the women’s side.  Highlighting Barton’s national championships was the men’s 4X100m relay team men with an upset victory, Marcela Solano winning the women’s hammer throw, and freshman Demetrius Lindo capturing the 110m Hurdles.  In addition to the three gold medals, the Cougars captured four second place finishes, two third places, and one fourth.  After finishing second at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships the Cougar men finished fourth overall in the outdoor.  The Lady Cougars finished sixth in the outdoor to follow up on their third place indoor finish.  Host school South Plains College continued its recent dominance in the outdoor championships as it won both the men and women titles for fourth consecutive year.  The Texans have won the title for the past six years while their female counterparts have a string of four straight.  MORE

Castagnini and Garland earn All-Region and Conference honors

Barton Community College sophomores Federico Castagnini and Clayton Garland were recently named to the All-Region VI and KJCCC All-Jayhawk West baseball teams.  Castagnini earned first team regional and conference honors while Garland earned first team conference and second team regional honors.  The duo led the Cougars in nearly every offensive category as Barton finished 33-26 on the season.

Castagnini led the Cougars in runs batted in and three of the four extra base hit categories.  The shortstop from Verona, Italy, batted .361 on the season getting 75 hits with a .563 slugging percentage finishing second to Garland for the team lead.  The Creighton University signee led the Cougars with 6 homeruns, 16 doubles, and drove home 67 runs.  Stealing 12-of-12 stolen bases, Castagnini was again second on the team to Garland in runs scored with 61 and triples with four.

Playing centerfield and batting in the cleanup position in the lineup, Garland led Barton in six major offensive categories.  The Cheyenne, Wyoming, native led the team in batting .363 on the season with a .581 slugging percentage in pounding out 78 hits including 9 triples.  Crossing the plate in a team leading 61 times and accumulating 125 total bases, Garland finished second on the team behind Castagnini with 57 runs batted in, 14 doubles, and five home runs.

Eighteen Barton Track and Field athletes to wrap up season at national championships

The Barton Community College track and field teams will wrap up its 2011-12 season this week as they travel to Levelland, Texas, to participate in the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championship to be held May 15-17.  The Cougars will send eleven men and seven women to compete in twenty three events.  Highlighting the men is freshman Demetrius Lindo who has the nations’ top time in the 110m Hurdles at 13.72.  Sophomore Marcela Solano highlights the women’s team with the top distance in the Hammer Throw at 186’1”.   Earlier in the spring the Cougar men finished second while the women finished third in the NJCAA Indoor National Championships.  MORE

Local talent headlines Barton women’s golf team at national championship

The Barton Community College women’s golf team begins play today at the NJCAA women’s Golf National Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida.  The Lady Cougars will play eighteen holes each day as the tournament concludes on Thursday May 17.   Barton, as the result of having four players qualify with their top ten individual finish in the recent Region VI Championships, qualify as a team as well.   Leading the Barton team will be Russell native Chelsea Dietz as she finished fifth at the Region VI Championships.  Fredonia’s Lindsey Wait finished 7th, Alyssa Dickman of Wichita finished 8th, and Hoisington’s Britany Axman  placed 9th.  

Rodriguez named to All-Conference Softball team

Alexandria RodriguezBarton Community College softball team’s Alexandria Rodriguez was recently named to the KJCCC  All-Jayhawk West second team.   Despite missing the last third of the season due to injury, Rodriguez garnered the conference recognition as her .361 batting average was fourteenth best in Region VI Division I.  Rodriguez, a sophomore from Wichita, Kansas, led Barton in most offensive categories until late in the season.  In addition to her batting average, Rodriguez led the team with a .526 slugging percentage, a .451 on-base percentage, seven doubles, three triples, and six hit-by-pitch.  Rodriguez also finished second on the team with twenty runs scored, twenty-two runs batted in, fifty-one total bases, ten walks, and was two-for-two in stolen bases.  Rodriguez will continue her education next fall returning home to Wichita to attend Wichita State University.

Barton Student-Athletes receive academic honors

The 2012 graduating class from Barton Community College included many student-athletes receiving academic honors.  In various ceremonies throughout yesterday as Barton recognized student achievements, twenty-two students associated with Barton Athletics received honors including outstanding graduates, student ambassador of the year, and high academic achievements.  Highlighting the list of honorees were Devan Boeger and Anna Voss, who both received Outstanding Graduate honors, Boeger and Deedra Richards for their Kansas All-Academic Honors, and Karisa Kaiser who received one of two Student Ambassador of the Year awards.  In addition to the individual honors, the Barton Athletic department expects to receive additional team academic honors to be released later this spring.  MORE

Cougars' comeback falls short in sub-regional championships

Barton 2nd Baseman Tanner Carpenter turns a double play around a sliding Cowley playerAfter dropping its first game of the Region VI Sub-Regional, the Barton Community College baseball team strung together consecutive extra inning victories before falling in the championship game Monday afternoon in Garden City.  Barton, which lost its opener Saturday afternoon 8-1 to Cowley College, immediately had to return to the diamond to battle through the elimination side of the bracket and earned a 7-6 come-from-behind extra inning win over Labette Community College.  On Sunday Barton faced top-seeded and tournament host Garden City Community College where the Cougars ended the Broncbusters season by winning 2-1 in twelve innings.  Facing the same Cowley team that defeated the Cougars handily in the first round, Barton led 1-0 before Cowley tied it in the seventh then tacked on three runs in the ninth to end the Cougars season 4-1.  Cowley, 32-24 on the season, advances to the Region VI Championships held in Wichita May 12-14 while Barton ends its season at 33-26.  MORE

Softball season ends in extra innings

The Barton Community College softball team fought to stay alive in the Region VI Tournament Saturday in Wichita but fell in extra innings to close out their 2012 season.  The Lady Cougars trailed by three in the bottom of the seventh to Seward County Community College but rallied to force extra innings eventually falling 7-5 in nine innings.  Barton fell to the elimination side of the double elimination tournament earlier in the day by falling 4-0 to Colby Community College.  Barton finishes the 2012 campaign with an overall record of 12-38 but increased their win total by seven over the 2011 season.  The Lady Cougars will lose three of their four infielders to graduation but return their entire outfield lineup, as well as, their top two pitchers for the 2013 season.  MORE

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees unanimously approved today the hiring of Carter Kruger as its next Head Women’s Basketball Coach.  Kruger, who joined the Lady Cougar coaching staff last summer, takes over the program after former Head Coach Darin Spence recently accepted the head women’s position with Newman University. 


Cougar baseball wraps up regular season with win, prepare for Region VI playoffs

The Barton Community College baseball team ended the 2012 regular season with a win as they defeated Coffeyville Community College Tuesday afternoon 9-6 at Emporia State University’s Glennen Field.  The Cougars, who improve to 31-24 on the season, finished sixth in Region VI play at 10-18.  They will travel to Garden City this weekend to begin Region VI Super Regional play at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday against the Eastern Division’s third place team Cowley College.  The Tigers finished their regular season dropping 3-of-4 to Coffeyville earlier in the week and will enter the contest with a 28-24 overall record including a 25-11 mark in region play.  The winner of the Barton-Cowley matchup will play at 1:00 p.m. Sunday against the winner of host Garden City Community College and Labette Community College.  The two matchup losers will play in an elimination game Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. for the right to advance in the double-elimination tournament.  Winners of each of the four Region VI Super Regionals will advance to Wichita for the May 12-14 Region VI Championship.

Garden City ends Cougars home schedule with twin bill sweep

Wrapping up its 2012 home schedule at Lawson-Biggs Field, the Barton Community College baseball team dropped both games of today’s doubleheader 7-1 and 4-3 to Garden City Community College.  The Cougars fall to 30-24 on the season, finish seventh in the conference with a 12-20 record, and tied for sixth in the region at 10-18.  With today’s sweep and winning 3-of-4 over the weekend, Garden City will share at least a tie for the conference title and a second place in the region in finishing at 23-9 and 19-9 respectively and 36-19 overall.  Barton’s next game will be Tuesday in Emporia against Coffeyville Community College.  First pitch for the9-inning game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Emporia State University’s Glennen Field.

Cougars bounce back from tough loss, spoil Garden City’s hope of top seed

After surrounding the lead in the final inning of game one to lose 6-3, the Barton Community College baseball team bounced back and held on for a 5-4 victory over Garden City Community College in game two of today’s doubleheader at Lawson-Biggs Field.  The Cougars, 30-22 on the season and 12-18 in the Jayhawk Conference, dropped Garden City into a three-way tie for the conference title as they dropped to 21-9 in conference play and 34-19 overall.  In Region VI play the Cougars move to 10-16 while Garden City sees their hopes of the top region seed dashed as they move to 17-9, three games behind Seward County Community College.  The two teams will return to the diamond Sunday for another doubleheader at Lawson-Biggs Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. 

Thompson’s three home runs lift Lady Cougar Softball sweep of regular season finale

The Barton Community College softball team finished its regular season with a twin-bill sweep of the Sterling College Junior Varsity Friday at Cougar Field with 4-3 come-from-behind victory and a 8-0 game shortened run-rule.  With the two wins and the final regular season and home games for the Lady Cougars, Barton improves to 12-36 on the season while finishing the conference and region season at 4-12.  Barton will play Colby Community College, 14-32 on the season and 3-13 in conference and region play, on Saturday, May 5, in Region VI Division I first round playoff action.  Game time is set for 10:00 a.m. at Wichita State University’s Wilkins Stadium.  The winner will face Region VI top-seed Butler Community College at 2:00 p.m. while the loser will play at 4:00 p.m. against the Seward County Community College-Garden City Community loser as the Region VI Tournament is double-elimination format.

Lady Cougar Softball falls to Butler in conference season finale

The Butler Community College softball team clinched the conference championship outright today as they shutout Barton Community College at Cougar Field 7-0 and 11-0.  The Cougars would muster two hits and committed five errors as Butler plated three runs in the fourth and sixth inning on the way to the game one victory.  The Grizzlies exploded for eleven runs in the first two innings of the day’s second game by scoring six in the first and five in the second innings.  With the two losses Barton drops to 10-36 on the season and 4-12 in conference play as Butler improves to 35-15 and 14-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.  The Cougars will play their lone remaining home and regular season contest this Friday as they step out of conference play hosting the Sterling College Junior Varsity.  First pitch for the seven inning doubleheader will be at 2:00 p.m. at Cougar Field. 

Cougars break from conference schedule, rout Kansas Wesleyan JV

Taking a break from the grind of the Jayhawk Conference schedule, the Barton Community College baseball team had an enjoyable evening at the ballpark in a 17-4 win over the Kansas Wesleyan Junior Varsity tonight at Lawson-Biggs Field.  The Cougars, 28-21 on the season and 11-17 in the Jayhawk Conference, scored in every inning in cruising to the run-rule victory.   Great Bend native Nick Ney got the start and picked up his first victory for Barton allowing 5 hits and two runs in three innings of work as the Cougar pitching staff combined to surrender only seven hits and two walks.  Offensively Barton pounded out eleven hits as twelve of the thirteen hitters reached base.  The Cougars will travel to Hesston College Wednesday for another non-conference game before returning home this weekend for a regular season concluding series with Garden City Community College.  First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is 1:00 p.m. with “Pack the Park” tailgate festivities beginning at noon.

Cougar Baseball splits day one of weekend series with Dodge City

The Barton Community College baseball team needed extra innings in game one then were shutout in game two as they split the first day of the weekend series with Dodge City Community College in Dodge City.   After scoring four runs in the top of the first in game one, the Cougars surrendered four runs in the fifth and sixth to send the game to extra innings.  Barton was able to score three in the top of the eighth then shut down the Conquistadors in the home half to win 8-5.  Game two was dominated by pitching and timely defensive plays as Dodge City scored one in the third and two in the fifth to win 3-0.  With the day’s split, the Cougars are 26-20 on the season and 10-16 in conference play while Dodge City moves to 16-26 overall and 10-20 in conference.

Cougars blow open game with big seventh inning to beat Brown Mackie 13-1

The Barton Community College baseball team scored early then plated seven more runs in the seventh inning to beat Brown Mackie College 13-1 Tuesday evening at Rathert Stadium in Junction City.   Playing a neutral site contest to provide a free family and military appreciation night at the ballpark, the Cougars improved their record to 25-19 on the season while Brown Mackie slips to 5-22.  Barton is in the midst of a ten game road trip stretch as they will travel to Dodge City this weekend to take on the Conquistadors in a four game series.  First pitch for Saturday and Sunday’s doubleheader is set for 1:05 p.m. at Cavalier Field.

The KJCCC men and ICCAC women captured the team titles in this past weekend’s inaugural KJCCC versus ICCAC Challenge collegiate track and field meet held at the Track/Soccer Complex on the campus of Barton Community College. In the women’s team challenge, the ICCAC ran away with the team title outscoring the KJCCC 114 to 57 while the KJCCC won the men’s title by defeating the ICCAC 97 to 74.    MORE

Barton Baseball picks up conference series win against Butler

Since splitting the conference opening season series at Hutchinson, the Barton Community College baseball team has lost each conference series three games to one.  This past weekend the Cougars picked up their first series win by capturing three of the four games against Butler Community College at Barton’s Lawson-Biggs Field.  On Friday the Cougars needed a bottom of the seventh game-tying home run by Federico Castagnini to go on to win game one 8-7 in eight innings.  Butler was able to split Friday’s doubleheader by scoring five runs in the last three innings to win 9-8.   In Saturday’s game one sophomore Ashton Sivigliano pitched a two-hitter as the Cougars run-ruled Butler 11-1.  Barton wrapped up the series by scoring four runs in the third and three in the fifth to cruise to the 8-2 victory.   With the three victories, Barton improves to 9-15 in conference and 23-16 on the season while Butler drops to 10-10 in conference play and 19-19 overall.  The Cougars will have the week off until facing Metropolitan Community College-Longview in a four game series next week-end in Kansas City, KS.  Barton will play its next ten games on the road before returning home April 28 against Garden City. 

Garland’s 3-run home run lifts Barton Baseball to 18-16 victory in weekend series finale at Cloud County

Clayton Garland’s three-run home run in the top of the ninth gave the Barton Community College baseball team a much needed 18-16 victory in the weekend series finale Sunday against Cloud County Community College.  The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take Saturday’s game one 4-3 then followed with an 18-2 blasting of the Cougars in game two.  On Sunday Cloud again came from behind scoring one run in each of the last three innings to escape with a 3-2 victory.  Trailing 3-0 in the weekend series and squandering a ten run lead in Sunday’s game two, Barton suddenly found themselves trailing 15-14 headed to the ninth.  After back-to-back singles by Alex King and Adam Smith and a Federico Castagnini groundout, Garland cleared the table with his home run.  The Cougars added an insurance run on a Ryan Tracy fielder’s choice scoring Dylan Turpin who had doubled to right field after Garland’s homer.  Barton, 20-15 on the season, will take a break from conference play on Tuesday as they travel to Hays to play a 4:00 p.m. nine-inning game against the Fort Hays State University junior varsity.  The Cougars, who are now 6-14 in conference play, will return to Jayhawk West action this Friday and Saturday as Butler Community College comes to Lawson-Biggs Field.  Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Saturday’s doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Barton Softball loses three in BUCO Bash

Returning to El Dorado three days after dropping two conference games, the Barton Community College softball team struggled again as they lost three games in the BUCO Bash on Saturday.  The Lady Cougars started the day losing a tough 4-3 decision to Maple Woods, a 7-0 defeat to Eastern Oklahoma, and then wrapped up the day with an 11-2 loss to Crowder College.  Barton will travel to McCook, Nebraska, on Monday to play McCook Community College in a doubleheader.  The Lady Cougars will return home to Cougar Field on Wednesday as Pratt Community College comes in for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.  Barton now stands at 6-27 on the season and will enter the Pratt game at 3-5 in conference play.

Softball drops two at conference leader Butler

For the third series in a row the Barton Community College softball team faced the current top team in the conference and region standings.  Today in El Dorado the Cougars dropped a pair of conference games to current top team Butler Community College.   The Grizzlies limited the Cougar hitters to only one hit in capturing game one 7-0.  Barton was able to muster seven hits in game two but eleven Butler hits aided by three Cougar errors resulted in a 8-3 Grizzly victory.  Barton drops to 6-24 on the season and 3-5 in conference play while Butler improves to 16-12 overall and sits alone atop the conference standing at 5-1.  Barton will travel back to El Dorado on Saturday for three games in the BUCO Bash softball classic.

Softball holds on against conference leader Garden City to earn doubleheader split

Surrendering three late inning runs to fall 6-4 in game one, the Barton Community College softball team utilized the rule book to preserve a game two victory 3-2 and split today’s doubleheader against Garden City Community College.  With the split Barton now moves to 6-22 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.  Garden City, who sat alone at the top of the standings, drops into three-way tie for first at 3-1 and 19-6 overall.  The Cougars next game will be Wednesday as they travel to conference co-leader Butler Community College.  Game time of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m. in El Dorado.

Baseball caps weekend series at Seward with big win

Andre Vierya versus Seward County Community CollegeThe Barton Community College team finished its weekend series against Seward County Community College on a positive note by winning 18-8 in game two of Sunday’s doubleheader in Liberal.  The Saints won both Saturday games by the scores of 9-2 and 15-3 and captured game one 7-3 on Sunday.   In going 1-3 over the weekend, the Cougars slipped further down the conference standings to 4-8 and 17-9 overall while Seward improves to 8-4 in the Jayhawk and 15-14 overall.  Barton will take a break from conference action and travel to region foe Brown Mackie for a nine-inning game at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in Salina, Kansas.  MORE

Devan Boeger earns prestigious national academic awardFacing graduation in May, sophomore at Barton Community College Devan Boeger would have easily been able to look back on the last two years with comfort, pride and a sense of accomplishment. Those emotions however, have recently been amplified, as Boeger is the reciptient of a Bronze Scholar Award, a prestigious national honor recognizing only the top 0.1 percent of the 125,000 members of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.  MORE
