Lady Cougars combine defense with timely offense in defeating Colby

Much like their previous meeting in January, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team used big runs to break open a close game in defeating Colby Community College 68-51 Saturday night at the Barton Gym.   Barton put together a 15-0 first half run then combined it with a 15-2 second half run to get victory and even their conference mark at 7-7 and improve to 17-11 overall, while Colby drops to 4-10 in the West and 8-20 overall.  The Lady Cougars will take to the road for Wednesday’s conference game as they take on the Pratt Community College Lady Beavers.  Barton will look for revenge in the 6:00 p.m. rematch as Pratt won the first contest 53-46 at the Barton Gym.  MORE

Lady Cougars unleash 18-2 scoring run to capture Jayhawk West victory

As been the case on numerous occasions for this year’s Barton Community College women’s basketball team, the Lady Cougars unleashed another big scoring run to defeat Butler Community College 60-53 Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.  Trailing by five with nine minutes to play, Barton went on an 18-2 run in the next six minutes to get the win and solidify their hold on fifth place in the Jayhawk West standings.  Improving to 6-6 in conference and 16-10 overall, the Lady Cougars travel to Hutchinson Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tilt against the No. 2 ranked Blue Dragons.  Butler, whose loss places them into a tie for seventh place with Pratt, drops to 3-8 in conference play and 14-11 overall.  MORE

Lady Cougars drop pivotal conference game to Garden City

In a battle for a home playoff game, Garden City Community College took another step in securing fourth place by defeating fifth place Barton Community College 61-54 Saturday night in Garden City. With Barton having a chance to tie Garden City in the West standings, the Lady Cougars couldn’t overcome a twenty-seven percent second half shooting performance in dropping to 5-6 in conference play and 15-10 overall.  Garden City, which increased its lead over Barton to two games, shot a mere thirty-three percent in the second half but countered with a twelve point advantage on turnovers to improve to 7-4 in the West and 15-10 overall.  Barton will look to maintain its fifth place in the conference as they take on Butler Community College, 3-7 in conference and 14-10 overall, at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Barton Gym.  MORE

Focused Lady Cougars pick up first conference home win

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team showed no signs of a let down from Saturday’s win over then ranked No. 6 Seward County as the Lady Cougars dominated Dodge City Community College 76-55 Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.   After being tied at eight, the Lady Cougars outscored Dodge 35-11 to close the first half in building a twenty-four point halftime lead and cruise to the victory.  With the win the Lady Cougars picked up their first home conference win of the season and improved to .500 in conference play at 5-5 and 15-9 overall.  Barton travels to Garden City on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in hopes closing the gap for fourth place and home playoff game positioning.  Barton trails the 6-4 and 14-10 Lady Busters in the conference standings as Garden City was an 84-58 loser Wednesday night against No. 2 Hutchinson.  MORE

Road streak snapped, Lady Cougars fall 61-57 to Cloud

One streak ended and another continued as the Barton Community College women’s basketball team lost a hard fought 61-57 decision to Cloud County Community College Wednesday night in Concordia.  The Lady Cougars, who had won three straight Jayhawk West road games, saw their road warrior streak snapped and continued a five year drought on the Lady T-birds home court.  With the loss the 13-9 Lady Cougars remain tied for fifth in the conference standings at 3-5 while Cloud improves to 14-7 overall and tied for third at 5-3.   Barton travels to Liberal on Saturday to take on No. 6 ranked Seward County Community College at 6:00 p.m.  The Lady Saints, 18-3 on the season and 7-1 in conference play, suffered their first conference loss Wednesday night 80-53 to No. 2 ranked Hutchinson Community College.  MORE

Pratt sends Barton women to fourth home conference loss

If basketball games were played based on history, there wouldn’t have been any purpose in playing Saturday night’s Jayhawk Conference women’s basketball game at the Barton Gym.  After all, Barton Community College women’s basketball hadn’t lost to Pratt Community College on their home court since 2005 and owned a 32-1 home record against the Lady Beavers.  However history dared to repeat itself as Pratt knocked off Barton 53-46 to send the Lady Cougars to its fourth conference loss at home this season.  Shooting a frigid 30% from the field and contributing to Barton’s second worst offensive output of the season, the Lady Cougars drop to 3-4 in conference play and 13-8 overall.  Barton will take to the road on Wednesday traveling to Concordia for a 6:00 p.m. matchup with Cloud County Community College.  The Lady T-birds came within three seconds of upsetting No. 2 ranked Hutchinson Community College Saturday night in the Sports Arena as Hutch’s Chelsea Small sank a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining for the 69-67 win.  MORE

Barton women pick up road conference win at Colby

Facing an eight point deficit in the first six minutes, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team went on a 23-2 run in the next ten minutes then held on late to defeat Colby Community College 61-58 Wednesday night in Colby.  The Lady Cougars led by fourteen at the break and as much as seventeen with 18:15 to play before Colby inched their way back into the contest.  The Lady Trojans actually took the lead twice at the 3:44 and 2:25 marks left to play but timely free throws and defensive pressure helped the Lady Cougars get the Jayhawk West win.  With the victory Barton improves to 13-7 on the season and evens their conference mark at 3-3.  Barton will next play Pratt Community College Saturday at 6:00pm at the Barton Gym.  MORE

Lady Cougars pick up second straight road conference win; Spence reaches 300 milestone

Forcing twenty turnovers and twenty-five percent shooting, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team defeated Butler Community College 55-39 Saturday night in El Dorado.  The victory evens the Lady Cougars conference record at 2-2 and improving to 12-6 overall while Butler slips to 0-3 in conference play and 11-6 overall.  The team’s twelfth victory also marked the 300th junior college win for Barton first-year head coach Darin Spence.  Spence, who coached his first junior college game at Butler, also picked up his fourth win as a visiting coach to the Butler Gym.   Barton’s next home game will be at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday against No. 3 Hutchinson as it will be “Pink Out” night at the Barton Gym.  In support of breast cancer awareness and Barton’s Relay for Life team, a limited number of pink t-shirts will be distributed while supplies last.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support as informational and give-away booths will be available. Lady Cougar comeback falls short to Garden City

Erasing a fifteen point second half deficit to lead with five minutes to play, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team faltered down the stretch and lost a 62-51 decision to Garden City Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.  The Lady Cougars grabbed a two point lead with five minutes to play but gave up critical defensive rebounds on missed free throws to help send Garden City to the conference victory.  Barton drops to 11-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play while Garden City improves to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play.  Barton will travel to El Dorado this Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. conference game against Butler.  The Grizzlies are 0-2 in conference and 11-5 overall after dropping a 63-47 decision Wednesday night against No. 3 Hutchinson.   MORE

Lady Cougars pick up first conference win on road at Dodge City

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team picked up their first conference win Saturday night in Dodge City.  The Lady Cougars fought back from an early seven point second half deficit to pick up the 71-64 victory.  Barton improves to 11-5 on the season and even their conference record at 1-1 while Dodge drops to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.  Barton will be back at home this Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. conference game against with Garden City.  Garden City, 9-7 on the season, lost its first conference game of the year 80-55 on Saturday to No. 3 Hutchinson.   MORE

Lady Cougars fall to #10 Lady Saints in KJCCC season opener

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team opened Jayhawk West play Wednesday night at the Barton Gym losing 75-57 to No. 10 ranked Seward County Community College.   After being tied with just under eleven minutes to play, Barton was outscored by eighteen point the rest of the way to drop to 10-5 on the season while Seward improves to 12-2.  Barton will travel to dodge City on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off with the Lady Conquistadors.  Dodge City suffered its first loss of the conference season as well as they lost to No. 3 Hutchinson 104-43.  Stats

Harris named NJCAA Division I and Jayhawk Conference women’s basketball player of the week

A day after being named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Co-Player of the Week, Barton Community College women’s basketball player Dionne Harris has also been named the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week.  Harris, a sophomore from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, averaged a double-double this past week with sixteen points and ten rebounds. Harris was also instrumental in Barton’s 63-61 victory Saturday night over No. 3 ranked Independence Community College by grabbing eleven rebounds, two steals, and scoring eighteen of her twenty-three points in the second half.  Harris shares the conference honor with Highland Community College’s Kathryn Thomas.    MORE

Lady Cougars knock off #3 ranked team in the nation

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team knocked off No. 3 ranked Independence Community College 63-61 Saturday night in the Best Western Angus Inn Classic held at Barton.  The Lady Cougars overcame a ten-point second half deficit to defeat the previously undefeated Pirates.  With the win the Lady Cougars end the first half of their season and head to Christmas break with a 10-4 record.  Barton will next play on January 4 against Seward County Community College in Jayhawk Conference openers for both teams.  MORE

Lady Cougars use 10-0 early run in victory over Southwestern

Building a ten point lead in the first four minutes of the contest, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team went on to a comfortable 67-48 victory over Southwestern College Junior Varsity Tuesday night at the Barton Gym.   The Lady Cougars, who improve to 5-2 on the season, will play fellow Jayhawk Conference members Coffeyville Community College and Labette Community College this weekend in the Highland Hotel Booster Club Classic.  Barton will play Coffeyville at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Labette at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.  MORE

Fast start propels Lady Cougar Basketball to big victory over Tabor College JV

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team got a much needed win tonight defeating Tabor College Junior Varsity 74-27.   After dropping its last two games this past weekend in Midland, Texas, the Lady Cougars used a 10-0 run to open the game and cruised to the forty-seven point win.  With the victory, Barton evens its season record at 2-2 heading into this week-end’s Hutchinson Classic.  The Lady Cougars will play Marshalltown on Friday and Neosho Community College on Saturday, with both games starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.  MORE

Lady Cougar Basketball open season with romp over Bethany JV

The Barton Community College women’s basketball team opened its 2011-12 season with a 81-43 win over Bethany College JV Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The Lady Cougars held the Lady Swedes to 22 percent shooting and forced thirty turnovers in giving Darin Spence his first victory as the Barton Head Coach.  Barton will take to the road this weekend traveling to Midland, Texas, for the Midland College Tip-Off Classic.  The Lady Cougars will take on host and No. 3 ranked Midland College on Friday and Chochise College on Saturday.  Barton will return home for a November 8 contest against the Tabor College junior varsity. MORE
