Looking to end the regular season on positive note, the Barton Community College baseball team’s rally in Sunday’s series finale came up short in losing 11-7 to Hutchinson Community College at Lawson-Biggs Field. The Cougars left eleven men stranded, including two in the ninth inning, to drop its third game of the four-game series to the Blue Dragons. The loss leaves the Cougars at 10-22 in region play and 15-34 overall while Hutchinson improved to 14-18 in the region and 20-28 overall. Barton wrapped up its regular season tied with Pratt Community College for the eighth and final seed for the Region VI playoffs, with the Beavers needing one win in its four-game series at Butler Community College to hurdle the Cougars in the standings. Barton had playoff hopes yesterday as Butler won the first two games of the series but Pratt swept both games today to knock Barton from the playoffs and end the Cougars’ season.
The Barton Community College baseball had more to play for this weekend at Lawson-Biggs Field than keeping its region playoffs hopes alive. Amongst the importance of wins and losses the Cougars played for a teammate, a member of their baseball family, and the realization of life outside of the game. Riding the emotion of seeing teammate Skylar Hill throw out the first pitch of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Cougars scored nine runs in the first four innings to win game one 9-6 over Hutchinson Community College.
“In my thirty-four years of coaching,” Barton Head Coach Mike Warren said. “Skylar Hill throwing out the first pitch today with his teammates gathered around him was the most moving experience in my career.”
The Blue Dragons countered in game two scoring single runs in five of the seven innings to win 5-1 and improve to 13-18 in region play and 19-28 overall. The game two victory by Hutch coupled with Friday evening’s 8-7 victory, leaves the Cougars in desperate need to win the series finale on Sunday to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. Barton, 10-21 in region play and 15-33 overall, are tied with Pratt Community College for the eighth and final seed for the Region VI playoffs. Owning the tiebreaker over Pratt due to the Cougars taking 3-of-4 from the Beavers earlier in the season, the Cougars can better their chances with a win in Sunday’s 2:00 p.m. nine inning game. Pratt travels to Butler Community College for a four-game series on Sunday and Monday.

Barton will have a week before returning to the field as they will take on Western Nebraska Community College on Sunday. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. at Cougar Field.
The Barton men's soccer team opened their 2012 season today with an impressive 2-0 victory over No. 18 ranked Northwest College at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The Cougars’ Sam McCrillis, who wreaked havoc on the Trapper defense all day, scored just four minutes into the contest to help lead the Barton offense. Ebu Camara helped seal the victory with an unassisted goal midway through the second half. Barton will play its second straight game against a ranked opponent as they will play at 2:00 p.m. against No. 19 ranked Otero Junior College, who was a 7-0 winner against Northwest Kansas Technical College Saturday afternoon. Northwest College will look to rebound against Northwest Kansas Technical College in Sunday’s 10:00 a.m. contest. MORE

The Barton women’s soccer team won their 2012 season opener today 2-0 over Northwest College. The Lady Cougars scored once each half to revenge a defeat to the Trappers in the second game of last season. Barton’s Bianca Barron scored both the goals with the first coming just six and a half minutes into the contest and her second coming midway through the second half. The victory gave first year Head Coach Aaron Avila a welcomed birthday present in earning his first victory leading the Lady Cougars. Barton will next play tomorrow against Otero Junior College in a 4:00 p.m. contest at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Otero was a 5-0 victor over Northwest Kansas Technical College in today’s late contest. Northwest College and Northwest Kansas Technical College will square off in Sunday’s 12:00 p.m. contest. MORE

Heather Williams, who covers sports for KWCH-TV and Catch It Kansas, spent some time interviewing current Barton track and field coaches David Schenek and Nigel Bigee about Barton and its athletes participating in the 2012 Olympics. View the video
The Olympic Games are usually dotted with the names of current or former Barton Community College track and field stars. The 2012 Olympics in London will have an exception to the traditional track and field representation as Barton will have its first former basketball player to join the list. Overall the Barton contingent will include one current track team member Akeem Haynes, eight former track team members, one former men’s basketball player, and one former women's basketball player. The athletes will be joined by a list of four coaches and one former men's basketball player (now a sports agent) who also have ties to Barton. Current Barton Track and Field Coach Nigel Bigbee joins three former Barton coaches who have various ties with athletes participating in the games. Headlining the former Barton athletes will be Tyson Gay and Veronica Campbell-Brown, who are among the favorites to medal in their respective events. Hyleas Fountain returns in the Heptathlon after earning silver medalist honors in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and will also be in contention. Haynes and his Canadian 4X100m relay team, Alonso Edward in the men’s 200m, and Leevan Sands in men’s triple jump will each give serious contention to a spot on the medal stand. MORE
The 2012 Barton Youth Soccer Camp "Goals Galore" was held July 30 through August 2.
Approximately 60 boys and girls between the ages of 4-13 years old from the Barton County area were in attendance to learn the game and work on both individual and team playing skills.
The Goals Galore Camp focused on the techniques of clean ball striking, passing, dribbling, one-on-one plan, and combination play.
Taught by Barton soccer coaches and players, emphasis was placed on teaching soccer skills in a fun and interactive environment.
